Any worn out Toyota key will work. How do I know? The J.O. who stole mine on Christmas '09 just walked right up, unlocked the door, fired 'er right up, and drove away. Luckily I got it back an hour later. The fool tried to outrun the cops in their CrownVics... needless to say it wasn't a high-speed chase!

Now I just pull the coil wire and use an old Club. All u can do is slow 'em down.

Well thieves aren't the brightest bunch. At least your story turned out a lot better than others!
 
Check out my previous posts on this subject. I tried to warn y'all bout this problem in Ca. Their value is going up in this state as they are rare and the parts even more rare. Fuel cut-off switch on the inside is what I'd suggested. Or, pull the efi fuse every night till you do that.

It's not only on the west coast its becoming a big problem here on the east coast. First gen owners are fed up with it. Insurance comp are paying next to nothing when its stolen that's only if you have full coverage.
 
Sorry to say but if someone wants to steal your truck, they don't need a key. Especially our trucks, just like older civics or camrys. They are simple enough to be stolen by an amateur thief in less than 3 minutes. Sad there are people out there like that
 
There are a couple ways. roll away to a flatbed, drive, even towed right from where they are. The most likely to get yanked are the unmodded ones believe it or not, scumbags don't usually sell parts off unless they are extremely stupid
 
There are new Craigslist adds every week in my area, offering rewards for info on stolen 1st gens. The parts command good money and sell fast. Both of mine are parked inside at my house when I'm home and my daily driver commutes to a military base. I do worry sometimes around town though, when parking for a couple hours at a movie theatre and such. The guy I bought my '87 from told me to be aware and showed me that even with a new ignition cylinder, some old keys will still work. He recommended using those Kryptonite brand motorcycle chain locks through a wheel and font control arm! I just use a hidden switch wired in-line through the EFI fuse.
 
Most likely not gonna start the truck to steal it. Best bet is to make it to where it cant be rolled somehow. Dont kno how but that lock on the control arm sounds ingenious
 
sorry to hear about this, i've never had any trouble around here....where i grew up we leave our windows down when we go into the store. I hate thieves though, are cars covered under the "make my day" laws?
 
I live in Oregon, and I had my 4runner stolen from my house in the middle of the day! Luckily, it was a guy running from the cops, and they found the vehicle within a week. The only real damage being my missing stereo system. My ignition was stripped out to where you could start it with a butter knife. When I got it back, I used the insurance money to put in a kill switch, 2-way alarm system, a steering wheel club and a petal club. I still pull the coil wire and constantly look at it if I am in town.

If anyone is contemplating a security method, stop, and just do it! I thought it would never happen to me, and it did. I would hate for someone to go through what I went through, and I can not even imagine how it feels to not get it back at all or get it back beat to hell.
 
I just had mine shipped from Portland after buying it earlier this year. After reading this I feel lucky it wasn't chopped up!
