Surprisingly, the big oil leak on my 98 2.7 was the oil pan. If you look at the pan, the bottom "sump" area is welded on to the upper part of the pan. It was rotting away and leaking from there. The other leak that I found was around the oil filter adapter area. The valve cover was also wet on mine.
The good news (at least for me) was that the rear main seal was in excellent shape.
I pulled the engine at 216K due to a headgasket leak into the #1 cylinder and performed a full rebuild. But it didn't really need it, but I figured if I was going that far, I'd do it right.
