2 star rating from Car and Driver???

It's also called "Car and Driver" not "Off Roading and Overlanding", or "Car Reliability Report". If you honestly compare the way the 4runner drives to all of the other crossovers, or competitive SUV's like the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Dodge Durango that's why they give it 2 stars. It accelerates slower, does not handle as well and gets worse gas mileage. On the other hand you don't see any of those vehicles being reviewed on the Expedition Overland website, or 4wheeler magazine or anything like that. The reviewers could also give a rats ass about the long term reliability of the vehicle they are test driving. They are writing for a an audience that honestly is not most of the people on this forum.
Edit: There is also some data showing that there are a lot of people who could care less what Car and Driver Thinks...

Yep, they're run by the government trying to persuade you to buy American.
CD used to review cars on functionality and ergos etc. Hell, they gave the new Camaro 5 stars, and that thing has to be one of the biggest fails in automotive history.

I used to subscribe to Car and Driver back in high school...many moons ago. I just like reading about all of the supercars and other dream cars. I understand what you are saying, but their audience has definitely changed over the years. Their thing has never been SUV's or Trucks, unless they were a supercharged SRT or SVT Lightning.
Hey maybe the 4runner would get 3 stars if it had a supercharger! :shrug:

Well it's like that time a Jeep Cherokee was placed superior to a 4runner in off road capability, despite the fact the Jeep broke and they had to have Jeep engineers come out to retreive it. I have absolutely zero faith in these kinds of written "reviews" which function more like subversive paid advertisements than anything else.

For what it's worth, most of the judges in that review said they preferred the 4Runner over the two "Jeeps" in the test, in spite of the numbers.
I questioned the test from the beginning since it tested only three vehicles; two out of three were Jeep; none were Chevy, Ford, Nissan, or Land Rover; one didn't have 4Lo; and the one that broke on the trail somehow won an off-road competition.

Really? Have you driven one? It's an amazing value... It's not for everyone, but to call it the biggest fail in automotive history is pretty short sighted.
Bottom line, the 4runner is not a drivers car. Not even in the competition. In fact, Toyota has no real cars of any interest to the typical driving enthusiast. I guess you can count the scion/Subaru..., but they are mostly irrelevant in that space.
Who cares what a magazine thinks anyways. It's useful to get perspective from people who drive many cars, but that is about it.

I was thinking the same thing. If you can run 7:16 on the 'ring for $70k, it's one hell of a bargain. That would be about like being able to buy a factory 6100 class race truck for $70k.

This guy is a pretty good reviewer up here in Canuckistan, don't think he's as swayed as the so called auto journalists the two big US magazines employ.

He makes good points, I came from a Jeep into the 4runner for a considerably more refined driving experience and I certainly don't think I'll ever explore the limits of the off road technology built into our TRD OR model.
From a personal perspective, I have colleagues with late model wranglers and cherokees with folders full of warranty repairs already, transmission, major electrical, no thanks. I considered the dodge rebel too because it apparently gets similar fuel mileage but again, 8spd transmission issues or complaints are rampant (cruised many of those forums). And I'd be hauling air like most.
No - there's something to Toyota's madness I think with these things, if it ain't broke...( except for the gas mileage these things get ) $1.32 per Litre in Toronto is like $4.32 per gallon figuring in the current exchange... our gas pricing here typically doubles whatever the ratio increase is across the US, all part of living in Canada. Anyway - not ranting, hopefully all the Texas folks come out of that nightmare for the better :thumb3:

I can't say I'm too surprised. Think about what truly makes the 4Runner special and what reviewers look for--I don't think there's a lot of overlap beyond "reliable."
As a road-going vehicle, the 4Runner has a host of issues:

It doesn't make our 4Runners any less awesome though.
As a road-going vehicle, the 4Runner has a host of issues:
- Terrible entertainment/navigation system
- Terrible fuel economy
- Underpowered
- Undesirable driving dynamics (body roll, nose dive, squirrely steering, etc.)
- Not a lot of technology (e.g. blind spot monitoring, active cruise control, etc.)
- Cheap interior for a $40k+ vehicle
As an off-road vehicle, the 4Runner is objectively awesome:
- Very capable off-road
- Great ground clearance
- Rear-differential locker
- Borderline magical MTS/Crawl/A-TRAC system
- Great aftermarket part availability
- Body on frame design

For how they rated it, it's pretty spot on. Now the off-road one they did where it came in 2nd, to a vehicle they claim scored zero with 4WD is pretty laughable. I wouldn't trust a Cherokee Trailhawk to have done half of what I have in my Pro.
