Oh yea, They came out at the same time.Where are you at?You should be a able to check local inventory on any of your local Toyota dealers websites. They are listed as FWD(four wheel drive) or RWD(rear wheel drive)

Just checked Dallas/Ft. Worth inventory just now and they are down to only 18 available and 11 of them are RWD. One of them is a black loaded Trail Edition!!Just last month they had 70+ available, so they are selling.

It's different depending on where you live on how to check it as Toyota is broken down into regions .
My dealership is "Freeman Toyota",just google it and it has a link for "inventory" ,then break it down to just 4Runners. Sometimes they will ask for zip so mine is 76148 if you need that to see.
Where are you at?What dealership is local to you?

hmmm... That Trail is a FWD though, not RWD. They dont make RWD Trails, right?? If they did it would kind of be an oxymoron, lol :)

They do list the Trail as a FWD,not a RWD. And right, No such thing as a RWD Trail Ed. Not sure when they up date though as that silver Trail they list sold last week. The info girl at the dealership front desk said,all jealous like, that some high school girl got it as a present from Daddy!!:rockthrow:

They have a loaded black Trail now, that just came in yesterday.I think dealers play games and hold back or hide some too. When I was looking for Trails to test ride last year ,I found a couple at dealerships that were not listed on this local inventory list by calling them all.

I live in Chesapeake, VA. None of the dealers within 100 miles has a rwd SR5 4runner now. They tell me they are not going to be here until spring.

2 WD 4Runner

I somewhat agree, but it is not for me. It is for a mid twenties single daughter who really wants it as an SUV. She lives near Charleston and has little need for 4 wheel drive but really likes the looks of the vehicle. The extra expense is also a challenge for her. So, that is why I am looking for the 2WD version.

Well, I just bought our 3rd 2WD 4Runner. I've had a 3rd gen in the past and now own a 4th gen and a 5th gen. I do understand why some choose a 4WD, or AWD, but, since you don't understand why some would buy a 2WD 4Runner, class is in session.

I like a front engine, rear drive vehicle, with body on frame, live axle in the rear and just a tad amount of understeer built into it. I'm 61 and that's what I learned on and have experience with. I also like the SUV configuration for carrying things for the family as I have a wife and 2 children at home, a 9 and 12 year old. The SUV fits me as I like an upright driving position. When you reach my age, this will be more clear to you.

The SUV is also nice when I load it several times a year for to go to our beach place. The body on frame is great when I tow a trailer and/or pickup a large load at the lumber yard.

I'm self-employed which translates to, I don't work, I don't make any money. So, reliablility is high on my list. I also value my time, so less maintenance and ease of maintenance (ie. I can do most of it myself) are high on my list.

I don't consider 4WD a necessity as I don't go off-road, at least not on purpose. The value of having it once or twice a year is not offset by the extra cost upfront and in fuel and maintenance. BYW, I'm at the point in my life where I can drive anything I want, but I still don't want to spend needlessly.

I also like the 4Runners size. I've owned Suburbans and the room is nice, but the handling and poor braking performance and maintenance issues don't make up for the luxury of extra size. I've learned from my 4Runner experiences that it is very sensible size, not too big and not too small. To me, the 4Runner is the perfect mid-size SUV.

Since I've extolled it's virtues to others in my circle, I surronded by them:
- my best friend and 2 of his sons now own 4Runners,
- 2 co-workers now own 4Runners,
- nephew drives a 4Runner,
- another nephew has an FJ Cruiser,
- 79 year old father-in-law drives a 4Runner.

Of the 9 4Runners of mine and close friends, 8 are 2WD.

Class dismissed.
 
I thought about getting 2WD when I bought my 4Runner because I'll only need 4WD for maybe four months out of the year. But then I realize I'm one lazy individual, and I don't want to deal with snow chains. So I paid for my laziness by going with 4WD.

My Tacoma is 2WD and it's got a rear locker too. :D

Well said, Sir. I'm on my second 2 wheel drive 4Runner. I admit that 4x4 is more legit, but for my realistic purposes a 2 wheelie gets it done. I love the 4Runner quality and solid body/frame feel (especially on my 5th Gen) and cargo capacity. I even lived in Boston with a ski house in Vermont with my 2WD. I obviously would not recommend it but I knew it was for a few years and had a cherry of a 3rd Gen in FL that I did not want to trade. I ran Blizzack shoes and drove like a maniac around snowy roads with zero slippage (ok, maybe once). I've got my mountain bike for off road! However, the 5th gen TE is REALLY badass...maybe one day...

Thanks. Yes, 2WD gets it done for many people, most of the time. Actually, in snow, ground clearance is key and 2WD 4Runners have a skid plate as well.

I've always thought that if other manufacturers had built body on frame vehicles as well as 3rd, 4th and 5th gen 4Runners, the world would probably would never have messed with unibody vehicles.

And, I do like the 3rd, 4th and 5th gens very much. Each have their own unique charms.
