If you're rig isn't from the rust belt, there's a good chance your pulley/balancer will come off by hand. Mine did at 190k. If you do use a puller, remember that the outer ring is just pressed onto the balancer, so pull from the inner ring. Should be some bolt holes there.

Tell me about rust! I ordered a JDM engine that the bottom of the engine has been exposed to a bit of sea spray air. The bolt has rusted onto the crankshaft pulley. After exhausting every power tool available to me, I used the old engine on a stand with my wife standing on it as a counter weight to keep me from lifting the whole thing off the ground with a 5 ft breaker bar. We calculated the tq needed to break it loose to be over 400 lb ft.

Rust sucks.

Rock Auto has an array, but not a Denso, which is what I bought several years

back. They also have an all aluminum unit for ~$270. Shipping to me was

$27.

I buy my denso replacements off of Rock auto as well.

ive replaced several radiators from various vendors. Denso has the worst packing regardless who you get it from. my opinion.

Well I wanted to swing back around and finalize this since it's a pet peeve of mine when we never get the end of the story.

After doing some research and comparing prices I basically told my favorite local Toyota dealer I'd have them perform the labor if the price was reasonable and they'd work with me on parts costs. They put me in their system as a "Shop" so I got the parts wholesale which made a BIG difference and did the timing belt, water pump, all the belts, tensioner, pulleys, coolant flush/fill, and a new radiator. Total was right at $1600 that included our 10% sales tax we have to pay here. Labor was right at $894 and I was charged 6 hours. They did NOT recommend replacing any seals unless they were leaking as some other here had mentioned.

With these trucks seemingly going up in value I figured having official Toyota paperwork showing the work was performed at the dealer would help long term value, and save me a weekend of busted knuckles in the process so I let them do it. Years ago I'd have done it myself to save the money, but these days time is becoming more valuable. Got the truck back today and looked everything over and it all looks great. I did research this dealer before letting them touch my baby and their reviews were stellar, and my experience was the same. The service advisor and I went back and forth a bit negotiating the price and they were good to work with.

I asked to keep all the old parts so I could inspect them and they were placed back in the new parts boxes. Timing belt is in SURPRISINGLY good shape for being the 20 year old original. I'm going to disassemble the radiator to take a look at the trans cooler and see how all that looked. I'll start a new thread on all that.

Dealer: did they give you a warranty for their work?
How long was that?

Regarding the seals, did you ask them if they would warranty their work and replace the seals for free if and when they started to leak?
It's not a question of IF but when. 20 year old rubber isn't getting any more flexible; only smaller and harder.

I didn't ask them about any kind of warranty. Probably in the paperwork somewhere. I'm so used to working on my own junk I never even thought about it honestly.

Found it, looks like the warranty is 12 mos and somehow tied to the parts if I read it right. Kinda explains why the parts are so expensive if you just buy them through the service dept, seems like they build in the cost of the warranty. For example the radiator was almost $300 if purchased through service, $165 through retail parts, and $130 with my discount. The idler and tensioner pulleys were crazy expensive like 5x what I got them for as well.

Looking over everything in detail last night I'm happy to say the tech that did the work did a great job. Everything neat and tidy just like I like it and all the old parts were boxed back up like the news ones came out of the box. Glad to see that kinda detail.

I disassembled my radiator to take a look at the trans cooler portion and it had just a tiny bit of corrosion. Probably coulda gone another 10 years but for $130 it was cheap insurance to just swap it for a new one. Denso came out of the Toyota/Lexus package.
