2000 4.30 Rear Locker into 1999 Unkown gear?

There's a guy selling a rear with locker with 4.30 gears for $250. He says that it has a leaky housing. Do you guys think it's worth buying? What would this job entail?

Yea I would jump on it, probably the axle seals are just screwed which is $10. You would need matching gears for the front (or regear the 3rd) assuming you don't have 4.30s. Locked 3rds usually go for $500 from what I've seen, not including housing.

First make sure you have 4.30 gears otherwise you'll have to regear your front diff to match. I could be wrong, but I think most non locker/auto 4Runners are 4.10.

you are correct. most non-locked automatic 4runners are 4.10.

my advice is take a long straight ruler and make sure the housing isn't bent (based on my personal experience).

It's almost impossible to find a 4.10 locked from a 4runner.

4.10 locked usually only come from 1st gen locked tacomas (96-04).

You can never have too much gear, especially on a turtle of a truck like a 3rd gen 4Runner
