Hello. This is my first post but I have been reading many posts on this forum for quite a while. I am a long time Toyota guy and recently sold my 2005 Tundra and bought a 2000 4Runner Limited w/ e-locker with 160k miles. I wanted to down size for something that got better MPG's and could be my daily driver and weekend warrior. I have big plans for my 4Runner starting with the the set of Icon CO's I have sitting in my garage!
But first things first, my check engine light has been intermittently turning on and off ever since i bought my 4Runner. I had it scanned right after I bought it and they recommended changing my thermostat. I hadn't ever gotten around to it for the last few months mainly because the light would randomly turn off for up to a week at a time and then suddenly be back on with no change in performance. I eventually noticed that every time I filled up with gas the light turned off and then noticed if the light was on and I just took the cap off and put it back on the light would turn off. I ended up replacing the gas cap with a Toyota OEM cap with no change. Same issues with light turning on and off at random. I went ahead and replaced the thermostat and reset the computer and it came back on within 25 miles. I just took it down to the closest auto parts place and had it scanned and it pulled the same codes. The first one is p0125. Code definition: Heated oxygen sensor (or A/F sensor) no activity OR Insufficient ECT for Closed Loop. There are 4 possible causes and 8 recommended fixes. I can type them up if need be but let's start there to save on typing. The second code is p0441. Code definition: EVAP VSV malfunction OR EVAP VSV stuck closed OR EVAP VSV stuck open. 9 possible causes and 22 recommended fixes! Where do I start?
Again, there has been no change in performance when light is on or off and the only thing I can relate it to at this point is something to do with the fuel system. It maybe idles a little rough but other than that it runs great. I had a 96 Tacoma a while back and if anything this 3.4 runs better even though it has 60k more miles.
Like I said, I have big plans for the 4Runner so I want to get these issues fixed ASAP before I start dumping money into it. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
List of future mods: Icon CO's (in my garage), OME rear springs and shocks, custom bumpers front and rear, sliders, 265/75R16 tires, and who know where it will stop from reading some of the build threads on here...
