2000 4Runner Key question

My wife and I just purchased a 2000 4Runner. The key it came with has a chip in it. However, all it will do is open drivers door and start the vehicle. It won't unlock from passenger side or roll the back glass down. Other than the dealership is there a way to get a master key and have it programmed?

can you post a picture of the key? By looking at it I may have good news. Also try to unlock the glove box as well

Just left Toyota dealership. The service manager looked at it and said it was a master key. I'll post a photo later. I got a cheap key made that just unlocks doors and the rear window. It won't start the car, but it does do everything else. I think it's maybe just worn down. Will post a photo later.

looks worn. if you only have ONE key you NEED to make another master key. We charge 55 for that key and then 45 to program it. Actually spend the money and get too made. we usually only charge one programming fee if you get it done multiple at the same time. Now the reason in the urgency. If you lose that key you have 2 options. Buy an 800 ECU from Toyota that has never had a key programmed to it and then buy 2 master keys to program to it, OR if you are lucky a master locksmith may be able to reprogram your ECU for a less cost. You may just need to take the ECU and take it to the lock smith with the master keys.

I specifically know this because I almost had to do this with my 99 runner I had just bought. That is until the previous owner came to the dealership a week later with a master key he had kept.

Amazon has aftermarket keys with gold reviews. Can I get two of those, have Toyota cut it, then program it myself? Or does the dealership have to program it?

No guarantees that they will work if you take them to the dealership. Dealer will guarantee that the factory keys will work just not toyota. if you search the threads I found the programming guide somewhere on here.

another thing to think about is the quality of the metal of the blades you are buying. if you intend to keep it for a while you may have to replace it multiple times. list price on the toyota key is 35.51 go to the dealership and ask for a 10-15% discount and ask if they charge to cut the key from code (you would need to take your license and registration in for them to do this). Cutting from code will bring back the original shape of the key versus cutting it by tracing your old one.

If so accidently lose your keys for a day and have them send a locksmith out to your home at your convenience and get some keys made.

Trust me it's the best way to handle this matter, drink a beer and watch them make keys....lol

If you are a standard member they will cover 50 on the price, if your a plus- premium member they will cover 100 on the key make.

Theory on why keys don't work. So the key pictured is worn pretty good. I imagine the previous owner unlocked and locked his door with the key and then also started his car, so in theory the key and locks aged together, while the other locks stayed basically brand new.
If you want it is very easy to take the locks out of the door and the ignition and have a local locksmith replace the wafers so that they are new again and also get a new key cut ( not copied, from old key) so that everything will be basically new and match the rest of the unused locks.

I have a job that has a certain fiduciary responsibility.... Insurance fraud (however petty) is not something I'm willing to do. I have insurance through someone else that would covers similar things.
I think I will try my luck with the $8 key on amazon then find someone to cut it for cheap. The dealer cut a plain unchipped kwy today and didn't do that great of a job....

Well that's too bad, really there is no moral high ground in this case. You pay for a service and so you can, wait for it....WHAT, you can actually use it, huh? That's so bizarre.

Don't feel like it's wrong to use a service you pay for. In all honesty you can call up AAA if that's the service you have, ask for the locksmith company they use and go to their office or shop and get the same benefits. But, I totally understand if you feel it's wrong to use a service for which you have already paid for in advance. I get it, honestly I do get it, some people like to pay for AAA never use it and then feel like they are so lucky to have had a tow for free, when in all truthfulness they have payed for the tow tenfold. :noidea:

Okay so your key wasn't good? How so?
If the key is hard to push into the cylinder (lock) then it's because they left the ridges on the key. You see when they cut a key by code, it cuts a fresh key, and sometimes that key will have what looks like little triangles between each set of cuts. In time those wear down, most places don't bother to grind those down for you, so maybe if you have a file you can whisp those off real quick.
Dealer usually cuts those mechanical keys for free, a locksmith will charge about 15 to cut a code key. But if you take that key you got cut in they will probably fix it for you for free, but I'm sure they can charge you 5 for it so as not to get away with anything.
