2000 4Runner Sport - recommended amp locations?

hi, i just got a 2000 Sport about a month ago, and i love it. except for the stereo, which needs a major overhaul.

does anybody have any ideas for places to put 1 or maybe even 2 amps?

i may be able to fit one under my driver's seat, but it will probably be a tight squeeze

i'm starting to think that my best option is a false floor.

also, where is the existing factory amp for this vehicle? i'm guessing it's a rather small one, and i won't be able to put a new one in its place, because whatever i buy will probably be too big for that space.

I have mine under the passenger seat... it fits in there nicely and it is easy to mess with the gains with the passenger door open... Ive also seen people mount them in the back compartment...

the factory amp is behind the radio...

there's already something under my passenger seat. i think it's a vent for the heater.

it's pretty bulky, it's under the carpet, and it's always warm. there's also a fan.

i can see some wires under there though, so maybe it is an amp? i suppose it's possible that a previous owner of the car put their own amp under the seat, and that's what that is...

i just took another look at it, and if it were an amp, it would be a really strange shape

i would consider mounting one in that rear compartment like you say, but i think i would be concerned about it overheating. it would probably need some sort of fan or at least a vent so the hot air doesn't build up.

If you have a rear heater then that is what's under your passenger seat, like you already discovered. My amp is mounted to my box right now. That way if I need all my cargo space it's easy to remove. I'm going to build a new box soon and will be moving my amp to a new position but haven't decided yet. Post up your final decision, I could use some ideas too

Under your driver seat or on one of the rear folding seats is your best bet. You can put it in the access compartment in the rear, it just takes some time and fabrication to make it fit right.

I can make you an amp rack that goes over your rear driver passenger wheel well. I made one a while back that worked great. It only sticks out 4.25" past the wheel well, holds alot of stuff, fits well, and leaves plenty of cargo room in the trunk area. I only got rid of it since i made a newer, bigger, more space gobbing amp rack for some new stuff i got.

Here is the only pic of it i could find. This is right after i made it / test fit the amps onto it. The pic also shows it not carpeted.

As you can see, this actually does not take up much useable space and you can also keep stuff behind it (It is where i kept my jumper cables / tow strap / etc).

If you would like one, let me know.
I can make it smaller / bigger / etc.

Yeah I like the setup there and it does look pretty functional too. I guess I'll fabricate something similar after the new box. Thanks for the idea!

i decided to take a big trip to Europe in a june, so i need to save some money, and i'm probably going to leave the sub and sub amp out for now

so since i just need the 1 amp, i'll probably just put it under my driver seat. i measured it and i think it will fit.
