2000 4runner Wheel Options --

Hi guys, forgive me if my questions are amateur! I'm new to anything pertaining to wheels and I am hoping to get some pro advice from all you 4 runner veteran/technical/mechanically inclined guys

Backstory: Bought 15" Cragar Soft 8 wheels from summitt racing. Black ones. Didn't have a clue about backspacing and they didn't fit (they were 4.0). I measured the needed space to be .5 inches. I have brand new BFG all terrain tires (30x10.5x15).

What do you guys think I should do.

1) Get 1" wheel adapters with bolt extension things and keep the 15" Cragar wheels.

2) Powercoat my current 4runner rims black. I found a cheap guy who will do it for $290 for all four.

3) Sell my BFG 15's, buy 16's, and then buy Cragar 16" wheels that have 4.5 backspacing. (I hope backspacing was the issue, I assume it was).

What do you think? The easiest route would be to just get wheel adapters but I've heard that may be a dangerous/shitty way to go. Is this true??? I also heard powdercoating can end up shitty if I curb the rim and it chips.

First off, what do you mean by they didn't fit? What size rims does your 4Runner currently have? You may not understand backspacing fully.

If your 4Runner has factory 16" wheels and are are trying to put on 15" wheels, then the problem lies with the diameter of the wheel, and not the backspacing.

If you do have the 15" wheels, then obviously sticking with a 15" wheel would be the easiest option considering you already have tires. A wheel with 4" backspacing is going to stick out a little further than a wheel with 4.5" backspacing and the stock 4.635" backspacing and I do not see how a wheel with 4" backspacing could possibly be giving you any problems with fitment.

We can definitely help, but need more details as far as what you mean by they don't fit...

Well, I bought these wheels off summit.

They didn't fit. The front brake caliper was rubbing. I put a 1/2 inch spacer on to check and see if it cleared and it did.

I know my wheels are 15 because I replaced the tires recently and got 31x10.5x15 tires. What other info do you need?

Strangely, the summit link shows the wheels as having 4.75 inch backspacing but they didn't use to say that. It used to say 4.0. In any case, I talked to someone else, a mechanic, and he said it was because of the curve of the cragar wheel. I'm so confused!

All wheels are going to be designed a little differently and if your 4Runner had 15" wheels stock with no problems, then it must just be the design of the cragar wheel. If it were me I would return the wheels to Summit and look for a wheel that you like with a backspacing around 4". If you have to go the spacer route, get a decent set (Spidertrax, wabfab..etc) not some junk off of ebay. I have been running Spidertrax spacers for over a year now with absolutely no problems. Others have been running them longer. The biggest problem is a lot of places will not mount new tires, or do work pertaining to the tires/wheels if the vehicle has aftermarket spacers on.

Thanks for the info. I did return them to summit and have been looking at others. I'm just afraid to buy them and have the same problem as the cragars. Do you think these will fit? They have 3.76 backspacking. My current, stock wheels are 15x7.

Keep in mind that the less backspacing you go with, the more strain you are putting on the hub/wheel bearings. Those are probably a bit too little backspacing for my liking. If you could stay between 4 and 4.5" I think you should be ok.
