2 antennas=-??????? they have 2??? im so confused now...
I thought the harness was just one big piece not 2!??

There's the mast antenna, and then the one embedded in the glass on one of the rear windows. One has a standard size plug, the other has a smaller plug. That harness connects the two. I only have the standard plug hooked up, and my reception is "meh".

Do does the factory amp use the same connectors as the normal radio harness? Or does one have to lop off the amp harness and splice on a standard radio harness?

Also our rigs have two antennas? Where is the second one located?

There's no hacking necessary. You unplug the radio from the amp, unbolt the two bolts holding in the amp, unplug the two plugs in the amp, wire the harness from the new radio to the harness above, plug the two harness plugs into the two plugs that were attached to the amp. No cutting necessary.

The most common mistake seems to be people look at the single plug that connects the amp to the factory radio and think they have the wrong harness. The harness plugs into the two that connect the amp to the dash harness.

I love my Pioneer AppRadio3. I am an iPhone whore. My phone plugs in, plays all my music, uses a bunch of cool apps, does BT connection for phone and music and is almost 100% soft touch screen. Looks awesome, easy install and great output too.

That's the one you use that plugs in after you pull the factory amp out.

While wiring this in tonight, I came across what I hypothesize will be an issue prior to actually opening my dash.

My Runner is a Limited, so it comes with 6 speakers. Does this harness work with that setup? Everything I've looked at says that this is the harness for the 4 speaker setup.

Now I'm confused...

The harness works fine. Mine has the 6 speaker system, which just means separate tweeters in the front.

The extra two speakers are just the tweeters in the front doors. They should just hook into the same signal as the front door mid's somewhere along the line. I wouldn't be concerned.

This is correct, at least in order to be able to utilize the rear antenna as well as it uses a smaller plug. This plug/jack adapter allows the ability to plug into the standard size jack on the Y-adapter.

Sorry, one last question.

Did you guys have to worry about your factory alarm going off after you installed the new stereo on the first startup? I have a sick toddler trying to sleep and I'm definitely working in the garage since Oklahoma decided to act like the Dakota's and live the the single digit temps this week.

My 4runner didn't have the factory alarm. However my understanding is that the security with the oem receiver is standalone from the main system. IIRC it requires you to put in a passcode or something if it thinks its been moved to another vehicle or something along those lines.

For extra insurance you could just pull the negative off the battery then you know its not going to do anything. Its good practice when working on car electronics anyway.

Yeah, I already pulled the negative as is my protocol when working on anything with juice. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't going to surprise the sleeping beast if alarms went haywire when I reattached the terminal.

Put in a Pioneer blue-tooth/cd/mp3/iphone/usb radio a couple weeks ago. I forgot the exact model, I think its a x6600bt? or something like that. Was simple, I just ordered the metra wires soldered color to color, obviously, and heat shrunk. I went ahead and bought a double din adapter, it's like a little nook underneath it, or you could get the drawer one I've seen. Wasn't sure which to get, didn't want to get the drawer because I wasn't sure how well it was made and if I braked everytime and it slid out/made a noise, well it would get annoying quick! For my 2002 4runner SR5, I needed to get a Y-connector, since there is two antenna wires. The main antenna, and the hidden-somewhere back antenna that's suppose to boost reception. Got that and the mini-to full antenna gauge, so that both would fit into the Y connector, and then the single wire could plug into the system. Worked great and simple to install. Extremely happy with it. Would've loved to get the Pioneer one with GPS, but I'm pretty broke atm. I'll send pictures and what parts I got if you're interested.

The single din pocket generally bolts onto the stock bracket so no worry's about it sliding out. It would be cool if you could verify the specific antenna adapters so we know for certain which ones to get.

Well not exactly sure if they will be the same. It's better to take it all out and check for yourself first. But I believe many 3rd gen 4runners will be relatively the same, but since mines a Sports Edition, and apparently that came with "premium sound", stuff might be different. I'll get the links right now.

Basically, the back antenna is a smaller one, and stereos only have one antenna plug. So you put this one on, to make it big-to small, think of it like a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adapter, and then you plug the two into the metra 40-uv43, and into the stereo. Simple
