2000 LTD, rear wiper intermittent not working

Hello,

Since last week (could be longer, hardly use it since usually we only get rain) my 2000's rear wiper will only run on full speed, intermittent is no longer working. I did find a writeup pertaining to the 4th gen, does anyone know if this applies to our trucks? It's more of an annoyance than anything really, but if I can fix it cheaply I would, we had some snow last weekend and it was annoying not to have the intermittent function working.

I don't think so. I don't believe there is an on-board relay on the 3g stalk. It's a dumb switch. The logic function is all on the Body ECU.

See attached. This is not to say you can't achieve a fix by surgery on the stalk, but it won't be anything like what you posted, and it might require going into the Body ECU. First thing to do is see if the correct signal is going to the Body ECU from the stalk, i.e. is there ground on the red/green wire from t13 on the stalk to t21 on the Body ECU when stalk switch is set to INT? That will tell you where you have to operate.

I've been on here a while and I read all the electrical stuff, and I have never seen anyone do either. I have fixed a stalk on a BMW 7-series myself (really expensive to replace), but I've not needed to go there on the 4Runner.

Thanks a ton for the reply, and the diagram. I think I will have to look into that when it gets warmer and drier, even with all the rain we get I rarely use the thing at all, even when I got up in the mountains during heavy snows, probably why I just noticed the problem last week (wanted to keep the window clear because I almost got rear-ended twice by the inept Seattle drivers on I5).

Sorry to dig up this old thread but my 2000's wipers (both the fronts and the rear) don't work on intermittent.

Did you ever look into this? or anyone have any ideas?

I have had this exact same issue happen. There is a rubber boot that houses wires going to the hatch in the hinge portion of the hatch. Over time the wiring inside of it flex and bend as you open and close the hatch. Eventually they break, if you pull the rubber boot off you and check.

In order fix you need to:
* pop back the side plastics in the cargo area
* remove the dome light and plastic piece holding it in place
* solder the break in the wiring back together.

here are some pictures of the location of the wiring and the breaks in mine. Mine also stopped all wipe function and the rear defroster from working.

Thanks for the info Tinigunner11, I must have been on something because when I checked my rear wiper today, all functions worked perfectly. So right now, it's just my front that doesn't work when in intermittent setting. I'll still double check that area to make sure no wires are getting cut though, thanks!

I need to look into this as well. My problem is the wiper won't kick on unless put into full speed, but than can be turned back to intermittent and will run fine... It is like the intermittent signal isn't telling the wiper to unpark.

This, at least last year, was only a problem in the winter, ran fine all summer and fall. We will see in a month or two if that is still the same issue.
