I've got a 2001 SR5 and the fuel gauge has been dead and I'm looking for anyone with a 2001 or 2002 that has tackled the same issue.
I've replaced the sender unit and chased all of the wiring and it's in good shape, no shorts, etc. The gas gauge at first would go to empty when I had 1/4 of a tank left and later(now) has completely quit. It will rise slightly (1/16 inch) when I start the truck but never fluctuate. I've read that other 2001 (and other years close) models (tacoma, sequoia) have had gas gauge issues but have never found a good reason or other thing to chase. I also tried another cluster and it didn't work either. The gauge was reading a resistance, slightly out of spec per the shop manual on both mine and the replacement cluster but the needle doesn't move out of below "E".
The gas gauge and sender design changed in 2001, so the architecture from the TSB for the 1999-2000 is different. I suspect Toyota tried something different becuase of the issues from the previous models, but I don't believe they cured it.
I seem to remember a thread about adding a ground wire to the system that helped out and another thread about this problem being related to the trailer wire harness. I may be on crack, but I seem to remember these threads but cannot find them again.
The electrical diagrams in the shop manuals are useless in trying to chase this issue. Does the sender unit have a separate ground or does it use the mounting screws to the tank to ground to? Is there any good source for an accurate electrical diagram for the whole truck? I don't want to take it to the clowns at the stealership but I'm at the end of ideas. I've been using the odometer to fill the tank but I dont' want to rely on it when I'm in the mountains and the mileage is affected by the trails. Thanks.
