2001 4RL -- lost tail lights and dash panel light

2001 4R Limited -- tail lights are out and dash panel light is out

Hello. I have a 2001 toyota 4 runner limited. The color is silver.

The light on my dash panel is completely out. I tried to turn the dial to the left of the steering wheel which dims/brightens the dash panel but that did not help.

Also, my tail lights are out. The brake lights do work and the blinkers do work and the hazards do work, but not the tail light.

I suspect that this might be some sort of fuse issue but I do not know for sure. I attached a photo of my fuse panel diagram.

Can someone help me?

Its a simple fuse. It is located in the box under the hood.

If you don't know how to change it or which one it is then go to Kragens or Autozone and ask them to help you. Most of those guys will be able to tell you which fuse it is in <1 min.
 
Actually, after messing with both of those 10a fuses, I eventually pulled the "tail" relay under the hood and tested it outside the car. It checked fine. After I put it back in, everything worked! I dont care which one fixed it but al light are back on and functioning normally. :zoom:
 
Im having the same issue on a 98 and i dont think its the fuse or the relay. I swapped fuses and the tail relay for the ign relay and it did not fix the problem. Anyone ever have this problem before? :thanks:

So, what was the eventual outcome? I'm having the identical issue with my 98 4 runner. Dash and rear running lights are out, blown fuse for tail, repeatedly blows the same fuse after replacement.

Are you running the correct bulbs?

I have #194's in my corner lamps from a Mercedes that do seem to use more power (they burn much hotter, one actually melted the shifter housing). Before I had LED tail lights, I would always blow the TAIL 10A fuse.

One day, after the millionth time it blew out, I changed it to a 15A. Of course, everyone will tell you it's not recommended to do so, but it's been 2 years. I couldn't give a sh!t what people think. Mine work.

Don't take it from me, make that choice yourself, but I haven't had any issues with it.

I have a 2000 4Runner Limited. I have no tail lights, no dash lights, doesn't appear that the headlights ever leave DRL mode. If I apply 12v to the side of the Tail Relay that needs it, the dash lights come on, the tail lights and marker lights on the passenger side come on, the tag light comes one, but I still don't have the marker and tail lights on the driver's side. If I energize the relay out of the socket, I can hear the solenoid click. I guess my question is what sends the signal to activate the relay? The simplest answer would be the light switch on the steering wheel. But where does the signal go after the switch is activated? I see there is a sensor on the dash that looks like a light sensor for automatic lights. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
 
Sounds like you have multiple problems, which makes me suspect you have some grounding issues. Is there some background there? Like did this start out all of a sudden or was it intermittent, were you in a wreck, does anyone in your family have a history of mental illness? OK, seriously, we can solve this.

First let me call my reinforcement [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION] to eat popcorn with me. Next, please clarify the problem, no tail, dash AND headlights? And then please tell me you have checked all related fuses, tell me which ones, with a test light or voltmeter. NOT just visually.

In answer to your question, yes the switch activates the relay, but it the auto off function works through there too. Lets solve it one step at a time.

[MENTION=107269]abyss2829[/MENTION] Also please confirm if you get high beams when you flash your brights by pulling back on the lever. Don't forget any fuse marked TOWING or similar if you have it. Highly co-sign testlight/VOM fuse check--visual is NO good. One sided problems often involve that trailer converter thingy. Do you have a trailer socket?

Here is our 2000 DRL circuit and overall circuit just so we have them handy. Tail lights are on page 16 of the overall.

Did you check your TAIL fuse as mentioned previously in this thread?
 
I have checked and re-checked each fuse for the tail lights with a DMM. I just purchased this truck less than 2 weeks ago, so I don't have any background. The hitch and wiring were there when I bought it, and didn't notice the running lights and dash lights not working at the time of purchase. [MENTION=10169]TheDurk[/MENTION]: When I pull back on the high beams they work, but will not work if I push forward as if to leave them on.
[MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION]: I have no tail lights, no dash lights, but I do have headlights, but they appear dim, so I assume it is the DRL's. Even though we know what assuming does....makes me grow ears and annoy Shrek
I haven't really looked in the back for a wiring issue. I put the 12v on the output of the tail light relay just to confirm that the wiring from there back was functioning. I however did not check to see if there was voltage to the tail and marker light on the driver's side.

Trailer Wiring

I just jumped the relay out again.
I confirmed that there is no 12v at the tail light on the driver's side.

I also visually inspected the trailer wiring harness from the plug to where it goes inside the truck above the spare tire. It all seems to be intact, I did not see any worn or rubbed spots. It is surrounded by a plastic wire protector.
However I checked the resistance between the pins on the trailer pig tail. From the exposed pin (which I think is the ground?) to the pin directly next to it, I get 7.2 ohms, between the exposed pin and the others there is in the millions of ohms, so no real connection there.

OK, let's start at the beginning. Since you have played around at the tail lamp relay, can you confirm that terminals 1 and 5 both have 12V. If they do we will try find out if it is being grounded by the switch. We'll address the left and right thing later.

I have 12v, but do not have ground in the tail light relay socket to fire the coil and send the 12v to the tail lights.

It's looking like the cut-out circuit in the cluster. There is a red wire with white stripe to Terminal 14 at the stalk switch. Try confirming that has ground with Taillights ON. If so, problem is in cluster. If not, problem is in stalk. Confirm by jumping T14 to ground.
