2001 4Runner What in the heck does the ECU-IG Fuse protect?

From what I've seen online, it *seems* to assist in controlling and shunting power to 'non-critical' systems (back wiper, power steering, etc.) NCTTORA has a link to a wiring diagram in a thread about it on this very forum.
