2001 4runner Transmission HELP

I'll try to keep this short. 2001 4runner 4x4 w/ 360,000 miles on it finally decided to crack the heads on it. I figure, with an engine/transmission this tired it would be wise to source out a lesser mileage engine/transmission (plus the transmission takes a 2-3 seconds to engage reverse)

Unfortunately, sourcing out a 4x4 transmission (a340f) is hard to come by. My local yard has an engine/transmission combo with 90k miles, but the transmission is a 4x2 (a340e)

Would it be wise to to do A340E to A340F conversion?
What year range of A340F transmissions will fit in my 2001 4runner?
I have also located a A340F transmission from a 2003 Tundra. Will it work?

Any help in guiding my decision will be appreciated.

This probably won't help ya, but I just roached the tranny on my '01 and payed $2600 to get it re-manned. Also had a rear main seal leak which they changed for only $300. I just looked at the post for the tranny swap and thought, Good god that's way out of my league. Looks like something from the death star. I got a 3 year warranty and it's from a very reputable shop. I'm good with it but I only have 160k on it and just bought it -

$2600 ouch man! Wouldn't it have been cheaper to find a used one?

I hear ya, Audiness. I really wasn't in a position to be too picky. Like the OP says, used ones can be hard to come by and you really don't know what you're getting. Not to mention, I'm not really equipped for that procedure. I guess given my situation the 3-yr warranty and knowledge that it's done well and now is worth the cost -

Well....I'm picking up a motor and transmission (a340e) I'll be swapping out the tail shaft on the transmission. Both motor and trans have 89k miles. Picked them up for a decent price of $1750...California price (LOL)

What year is the transmission from?

Not sure on converting the transmission or the engine swap, but the actual transmission removal and replacement it not difficult. It won't help you now that you have already bought the parts, but for future reference for anyone else check car-part.com and eBay. I priced several in the sub 600 range before I decided to swap to a manual a few years ago.

Motor and transmission was coming out of a 2001 4runner (4x2) with 89k miles. The original intent was to purchase both the motor and transmission due to the low miles and swap out the rear tail shaft of the the 2WD transmission so that it accepts the transfer case on my vehicle (as shown: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/3rd-gen-t4rs/132259-a340e-a340f-transmission-swap.html)

Turns out after the motor started leaking oil out of the head gasket area during compression testing. I didn't buy the motor/transmission. So now looking at a 2000 4runner with 138k miles. This one is a 4x4 and is completely intact so I'll start the vehicle and observe it for a bit...LOL.

EBAY and CAR-PART.COM are excellent resources, but locating donor vehicles are a pain. Once I get what I want, It should take a good part of the day to do the switch.
