2001 and 2002 Are NOT Drive By Wire

Yeah, I just looked at/played with mine too. The spring you can see is just a return spring.I feel like it is too. That's not technically a "Drive By Wire" system. I think just about all fuel injected cars/trucks have TPS at the TB, so that's kind of a moot point on the TPS being on the front of the TB to control the DBW system.
This wasn't meant to be something to split hairs or argue over at all.
But "everyone" hears/reads "01/02 are DBW", and they really are not. That's all I was getting at.
In what conditions the computer controls/regulates the throttle with the motor on the TB- I do not know. Like we've kind of all agreed on- it's at least related to cruise and VSC.

Or like you said some form of DBW.

I'm glad you brought the topic up last week. I always assumed there was a sensor on my gas pedal that told the throttle body what to do with no cables involved. It's good to know!

Discussions like this can get to the bottom of things.
Hear me out on this,
A poster a week or so ago said he cleaned his TB
After, engine idle was surging 2000 - 3000 rpms
He disconnected the accelerator pedal position sensor
Idle dropped to normal
Sounds like he could of gotten cleaner into the position sensor from shaft side, shorting it so to speak. This was happening not touching gas pedal.
I suggested using a nonconducting cleaner , no response back.

Does that sound like DBW to ya'll, does to me.

I guess the term drive by wire is misguiding. It should be more like electronically assisted throttle control or something along those lines.

Tyler James Inc in regards to splitting hairs arguing about a topic. This was just like sitting in my backyard around the fire pit, beverage of choice, shootin da chit. This forum makes it a big back yard is all.

After reading the power point on thottle control, it clearly states 2000-02 runners are drive by cable.
Of course, it also states the '03/'04 V6 Tacoma's are "ETCS-i & Drive by Cable" - which is what the '01/'02 4Runners are (how else would an 03/04 Tacoma ECU be able to run an 01/02 4Runner motor).

So, heres what we have (well, you have - I have a '99!):
- Cable to throttle body that can control the throttle body directly
- ECTS-i (DBW) control that can override that cable control

There was never (in my mind) any sort of pedal position sensor at the throttle pedal... and I hope people never thought that was the case.

Looking at the ECU diagrams, there is a throttle position sensor, an accelerator position sensor, and a throttle control motor with clutch. The ECU can, when it wants, completely electronically control the throttle - thus the term Drive By Wire. Just because the accelerator position sensor is on the throttle body, doesn't mean the ECU can't/doesn't override the throttle position in some circumstances.

Okay, so it's DBW with a remote mounted, cable connected operator.
But not DBW by definition-

Its just easier to explain it as DBW when people are doing head and TB swaps from older to newer vehicles. So much easier to type DBW. Can we leave it at that? We all know your right by definition.

Very well put, I got a case of tunnel vision. Wasn't looking at it in the sense of what TJInc is doing. More me prepping for what might happen to new to me 01.

It is DBW with a cable operated backup... The ECU can disconnect the throttle plate from the throttle cable and control the throttle electronically - that is by definition DBW (no more mechanical link).

When the ECU is off or in a fault condition, the throttle disconnect clutch is un-powered and you have direct control of the throttle plate with the cable again.

Haha but without the cable, there is no TPS Charlie [emoji23]
The cable is necessary for operation.
At no point can the driver regulate throttle without the cable.
I just want to make sure you understand that [emoji12]

LOL. We are on the same page with that last part.

It is just one of those awkward hybrid situations. You know, before Toyota figured out how to guarantee perfect throttle control with true DBW and never have any unintended accelerations.

LOL And the winner is who pissed up the wall higher.
Bottom line is without cable you go no where.
We wouldn't get better thottle response, MPG's etc without hybrid system.
Ha sure is gettin hot around the fire pit, hand me another beer.:dancin:

2001 T4R Owner Response

Take it from a owner of a 3rd gen T4R 2001 in year. Upon trying to clean my throttle body. Had already pulled intake box and tube and put my pedal depressor on the gas WOT. Walked around the vehicle and noticed it was only 15 to 20% open. I had to remove pedal depressor cycle key to RUN and then press the gas pedal and can audibly hear the motor click and whirr the butterfly open. So that means without the electronic side of things you aren't driving this vehicle by cable only. Further note there has to be some mechanical linkage between the cable and butterfly but it is not meant to open to throttle itself and relies 100% on the ETC. But like you said not really a genuine DBW design. However the cable is no way shape or form a backup or meant to override control.

This came back up good.
You know that bundle of grounds attached to intake plenum on drivers side you have to remove to do VC gaskets. Leave the bolt loose and see what happens when you start her up, idles shitty, turning butterfly linkage doesn't rev correctly.
Take look at work I did, missed loose bolt, drive to see if it clear up not happening, could floor pedal would make 35-40 fighting pedal input Limp Mode. Code reader had several codes related to TPS motor on backside of thottle body etc.
Look at it again find loose ground wires tighten bolt BOOM done. It's more DBW than you think it is. Half way hybrid.
