2001 Engine Replacement question - ECU

I got a JDM engine with 56000 miles on it to replace my old engine with 160000 miles. The previous owner didn't take care of it and its burning oil.
My question is, If I am installing the same type motor in as before will I need to re-flash the ECU?

No. you will be fine. I did a JDM swap in my 97.

But you will need to swap a lot of parts from old engine. Very important to swap your USDM fuel injectors.

Reuse your old wiring, and simply have the engines right next to each and swap over parts. If I remember correctly, I had to swap the oil pan, oil cooler, water pump, exhaust and fuel injectors. At first I didn't swap the injectors and was getting a bad misfire.

Also good time to do a new water pump if needed. Front and rear main seals. Valve cover seals.

Exhaust manifold may need to be swapped, along with the accessory pulleys if they don't match.

JDMs may be cheaper or have less miles but sure is a bit of work to put it all back together.

2001 so you have 3.4 auto with throttle-by-wire. So no EGR but you will need to keep entire throttle body and probaby exhaust mnifold that goes to Cali type precat.

Thanks for the quick reply's guys. Lots of good advice on here. Its my wife's daily driver so I'm trying to get everything right the first time with out much troubleshooting lol

I just did this swap and it took me the better part of two weeks taking my time and swapping everything over. You basically end up using nothing from the JDM motor except the longblock. All accessories, intake manifolds and exhaust manifolds from your engine. Oil pan and pickup need to be swapped. Make sure you have new gaskets and parts for everything else.

I'm sure it's been posted somewhere, but why would you need to swap the intake manifold and oil pan/pickup?

What vehicles do they get these engines from? I know they came in the Tacoma, T100, Tundra, and any Japanese named variants, but I wouldn't think Toyota would change mounting designs THAT much.
Exhaust manifold I understand, as even an inch difference along the whole length of the vehicle changes the angle, and Cali exhaust, etc.

Some 5vzfe were in vans. That had a different set up front. So different shape of oil pan. The intake has different bullshit on it that you can't use with usdm. Depends where the 5vzfe was in before you got it.

Yeah, most JDM's I see listed for sale look like this and need a whole lot of parts swapped over:
