2001 Headlight No working

2001 Headlight Not working

Hey Guys

My rig is a 2001 SR5 w/DRL
DRL has been disabled by cutting Black/Yellow stripe wire.

Installed HIDs and all was working well.

Hit a trail and that's when it all began....

Pulled over to help some fellas out...turned off vehicle and she wouldn't start back up. Jumped her back to running (Jump box is a must) and continued on.
The drive home I realized I had no headlights!
Got home and called it a night.

Next morning vehicle needed jump again and started up, but was idling real rough. about 300-400 rpm
Drove it and she stalled, was able to shift to neutral and she started right up! Revved her up and made it work. Turned it off and tried for grins & giggles and she started right up and idled like nothing ever happened.

Still no headlights...

On to the issue

Reconnected the cut DRL wire and tested.
Checked the HEAD relay and didn't feel it clicking with switch turning on/off
Grabbed a new relay and tried it no click...no headlights.
Removed relay and have two positions that have power and two that don't.
Checked the fuses and no power to any of the headlight fuses...they all checked good.
Removed the cover from the relay and when actuating the relay by finger the lights turn on and off with switch.
Ordered new Switch Stalk...didn't make a difference.
Something is not actuating the relay.
Made a jumper to give me lights and it works, headlights come on/off with switch and also
turn off when ignition is turned off, light switch is left on and door is opened.
So the headlights are in good working order as are the fuses.

I believe I have a loose connection somewhere and I need some help in determining where.

I do have a test light and DMM.

Actually not, because the fuses are downstream from the relay, so fuses are not normally powered. The lights come on when he jumpers, so fuses are good.

I have a very busy Easter weekend, so I can't noodle this one right now. But here is the relevant EWD if anybody else want to play ( [MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION] ).

OK, I need a little clarification, when you say you made a jumper, what circuits did you connect to each other? And are you saying that when you made the jumper, the headlights work as intended from the factory?

The relay on a DRL system is activated by the stalk switch, but through the DRL relay, it's not a happy go lucky set up at all.

I'm a little busy this weekend, but I'm not all that into Feaster like El Durko. It's my turn to wash the space shuttle, and my 3 year old grand daughter is graduating from Cal Tech. And my weekend project is to build the the "Mother" of the mother of all bombs. But I'll try to fit you in if you are patient.

Let me know where you put the jumper, and we'll go from there!

Ok. The orange wire is what is allowing me to have headlights right now.

OK, I'm going to go ahead and assume you jumpered terminals 1 and 2 on the relay circuit. Now the second part of my question needs an answer. With the jumper in place. Does the system work as intended?:fish:

Yes it works as intended. Just like factory, except no DRL which is ok with me.

So have you swapped in a KNOWN good relay? Or tested the relay? I know you said you had power in two locations and you are powering the 3rd leg of the relay with the jumper. That leaves only the ground circuit going to the DRL relay. Before it get's to the Main DRL relay located to the right of the steering column, it goes through two connectors at the BODY ECU(fuse block inside vehicle), and Junction connector J4 located in the left side A pillar. If you could check the connector at the Main DRL(red wire at term 6) for continuity to the Head lamp relay at terminal 3, that would rule out the wiring and connectors I mentioned. Term 3 is the one that does not have power and is not jumpered.

If that circuit is good, it points to the DRL relay, since the stalk is working. Start with that circuit if you can.

I did purchase a new relay and tried it with the same results. I will test as requested in the daylight tomorrow and let you know what I find.

One thing I did notice is even though the DRL wire was reconnected I DO NOT have DRL on. I was wondering if this was due to them being HID or the DRL module being bad.
 
Hi, guys. I have my daughter and husband visiting from Brazil so not much internet time. You seem to be making progress.

Quick question to OP: Did you check the little DRL fuse? That fuse sends power to the DRL relay that it needs to enable the Headlight circuit, as the default position is DRLs ON.

Yes The fuses good and intact
 
Lights are now working....upon closer inspection and testing for continuity I re-seated the plug at the DRL module and checked for grins & giggles and wouldn't you know....headlights now working....with the original HEAD relay.

I had exactly the same problem in Moab a couple weeks ago. Came out after dinner and no headlights so I drove back to the RV park with my flashers on. Next day I found the connector on the DRL module wasn't fully seated. I guess I didn't get it all the way back on when I added a switch to disable the DRLs.

Hey folks, I know this is a 7 year old thread I'm reviving. I just wanted to give a sincere thanks to [MENTION=102597]IBallEngineer[/MENTION] for this post above, as it just really helped me troubleshoot my issue with my 2000 4Runner LTD headlights not working. Turns out there was a mysterious break in the red wire somewhere in the wiring harness between the Main DRL and the HEAD relay. I was able to bypass the break with a splice (with some nice heat shrink).

Thank you to everyone who comments on this forum and helps troubleshoot issues. You are not only helping the people directly in the thread, but countless people afterwards - helping to keep our 4Runners running!
