2001 Rear Suspension Opinions

Hi all, I'm new to this posting stuff but I had a question. I have spent hours reading through all different kinds of forums (including this one) and have found lots of valuable info, but nothing that has made me feel certain.

So I have a 2001 4Runner with Total Chaos long travel in front with Fox 2.5 8" Coilovers. I am looking to get new rear suspension. I currently have 2.5" Downey lift coils, but I would like a little more height and a little less bottoming out. I would like to get the truck as level as possible. As of now it looks like I will go with the SS 1.2A rear kit.

I'm just looking for some reassurance that this kit will be a good match for my front suspension? Or if there is anything that would be a better match that I may have missed?

Any opinions would be greatly appreciated.

For bolt in I would say SS1.2 or Icon's rear 4runner shocks. Icon's might be a better match to your long travel front. Check it out.

you would be better off with some reservoir shocks. the bilstein 5150's would be good. also, i would look for some stiffer springs over the LC's. i think those would be too soft for desert running

maclean216: Yah I have seen the icon shocks, they are just really expensive, but definitely still thinking about it.

steezemcqueen: As for the stiffer springs, are you suggesting like an ome 891 or maybe some custom deaver coils?

With that said, any input on if the adjustable panhard bar, new bumpstops, extended brake line, and parking brake extension bracket (the other components of the ss 1.2 kit) are necessary to run the truck once lifted higher with the new springs?

the extra components are not required. especially if you are only doing 3 inches of lift or less. once you hit 4" 5" 6" of lift, yes do them.

Sweet another runner owner building theirs for the desert. I am in the same boat as you looking for a good rear shocks. Icon has some awesome shocks but not for $800. After doing some research I am going to run some 05+ tacoma fox OE reservoir shocks and some stiff coils. The fox's only run about $220 each shock and the guy that is running this setup currently says they perform great. Here are some pics of the setup

Once I get my long travel kit in a year or so I plan on doing the rear suspension like this. This a fellow members setup on here (Chaplin) with is he is running a SAW double bypass, 891 coils, and bump stops.

First you need to make a list, if you haven't already, of what the vehicle will be used for mainly.

High speed desert running, Rock crawling, expedition, lone driver, family running, heavy cargo, stripped down to minimum weight,etc?

The OME 890 or 891 (~3" of lift) will carry more weight than stock LC coils (~2-6" of lift). OME does make heaver versions for LCs if you want the length and the capacity.

There are always compromises unless you are building a "specifically built" vehicle. If you ALWAYS run with the exact same amount of gear and passengers, it makes it easier.

The picture of the outboard mounted SAWs (above) may work great for desert running but when rock crawling my tires rub on the wheel wells (behind the outboard mounted shocks).

I definitely like the fox shock idea, and am going to look into it.
The custom shock hoop on the frame is sweet, but the bypass shocks and the bumps stops are a little out of my price range right now.

I don't have a typical set weight in my car, nor do I have a typical type of terrain. Never do any real rock crawling, but you never know what you'll come across when offroading. I think I will look into the ome landcruiser coils as an option.

Anybody ever had any experience with lc coils and the downey lift coils?
Just trying to figure out if they are similar as far as how soft of a ride they are.

Also anybody had experience with the ome 891s and desert offroad terrain?

Man your 4runner looks awesome with the long travel kit! Im going to ask a couple of guys I know that have long travel kits on their 4runners and see what spring they are running and I will let you know.

Those front fenders look like the glassworks unlimited fiberglass fenders.

Thanks man. Yah you probably did see it at the school. I used to go to school there and I still go to Frogs gym in the pyramid. So you'll probably see my truck around every once and a while.

PhdNPrerunners is right, they are the glassworks unlimited fenders for the 4runner. I originally got them in black, but recently repainted them with some rattle can olive green.

Alright so I have researched some more and found the OME 861 coils (OLD MAN EMU FRONT Coil Springs for 80 series LOW HEIGHT, HEAVY LOAD (110-250LBS)). They are stock replacement springs for the front of an LC but heavy duty (about 1/2" lift on a LC). They should fit the rear of my runner, and give me the same amount of lift as an 8 wrap used LC coil (but be a little stiffer). They have almost the same length of 19" -19.25" as some of the used 8 wraps I have seen in some of the posts.

Am I thinking correctly? Any input would be great. Do you think they will be too stiff? I plan on doing mostly desert offroading. And if it seems like a good plan, I will probably combine it with some Fox 2.0 remote reservoir shocks. Any thoughts on those shocks?

The foxs will work good and they are reasonably priced. They only run about 210 a piece. I am going to pick up a set here soon when I get paid.
