2002 4Runner ABS codes

I was at my mechanics today getting my steering rack bushings changed and also diagnosing my ABS problems. I had my ABS, VSC OFF, TRAC VSC lights come on randomly at times. Also had ABS go off every time I brake and it would go crazy in 4wd.

He has this super expensive snap on reader which reads ABS codes and my $70 one doesn't. There was a code for front left sensor, ABS pump and some circuit code.

Anyway he cleared the codes and it seems like my problem is gone. He also told me to clean all the contacts with contact cleaner on the brake module or whatever its called under the hood.

So to my question. Is it just the really expensive readers that read ABS codes? Do the smart phone reader apps read them? I want to be able to read as well as clear them.

Your 4runner actually has one built into it. You don't need anything more than a 2" long wire. Paper clip works as well. If you have a fsm it tells you how to do the diagnosis and what the codes mean. Pm me and I can send you the pages you need.

I would say a bad wheel speed sensor, but you'd have the "emergency light" on if it were one of them. Try the zero yaw calibration/deceleration sensor calibration, found here:

(Don't forget to go to post #9 and read the deceleration sensor reset instructions as well. If this isn't performed after the yaw reset the minute you drive, the lights will come back on.)

EDIT: just read your post again. I see you got the lights off, but I'll leave the tidbit above. Only more expensive readers can wipe the ABS/airbag codes. Some of the less expensive readers can "read-only" those codes but it usually takes a more advanced reader.

It's been awhile since I've had to reset abs codes, but I'm 95% positive I reset my light with the built in abs code reader. I'll have to read the manual again but all abs codes can be read/reset via the dash board diagnosis port under the hood.

Edit with only a jumper wire.

I have the manual but didn't look in it yet. Would that be in the diagnosis section?

It should be either there or in the abs section. I don't remember off the top of my head.

Yeah, are you talking about reading the blinking ABS lights and airbag lights? Jumping TC & E1? Cuz you might be right, but I've only used this method for airbags.

Yea, just counting blinking lights. It's worked every time I had to figure out why my abs buzzer wouldn't turn off.
