2002 4runner sport -- ticking sound when in gear & stopped

2002 4runner sport 4X2, 113K miles.

When truck is in gear and stopped, such as at a light, there is a ticking noise from the engine. In neutral or park it goes away. When moving again and the engine begins to rev, ticks get closer together & then noise is overwhelmed by normal engine revving.

I have heard multiple explanations, from:

*trans fluid level is low or in need of change along with a filter
*exhaust hitting the cross member for the tranny
*K&N intake mounts had come apart from the engine bay and were 'ticking' against the metal
*see if the cat is coming apart inside
*flex plate

The noise (as well as a generally rougher engine feel) seems to have started after a 110K timing belt replacement by my mechanic -- who insists this is a transmission problem.

Well, did you check items listed?

I know with my ticking, it got quieter when i started spending an extra 10 bucks a tank by using 93 octane. But you're making it sound as if its metal to metal contact type of noise.

If the other things you mentioned aren't it, it could be an exhaust leak or even valves. I would go around and listen with a mechanic's stethescope while a buddy has it in gear with his foot on the brake. You should be able to find where it's coming from.

I have the same tick you are describing, ppl tell me that it sounds like a stuck lifter valve. I have started to run a quart of ATF in my oil for about 100-150mi before doing my oil changes. I've only done it once, but I'm hoping that it will loosen up after a few oil changes.

Your engine started running bad after the new timing belt install? I bet it wasnt done right.
