2002 speaker install

I have a 02 4runner and am unsure about the a front speaker install I am about to do. Will I have to actually cut the wires to the speaker and then try to reattach them to the new speakers? Or is there a harness of some kind? Any guide or info on installing component speakers and a new HU in this vehicle is welcome. Thanks

call crutchfield and see if they will send you instructions... theirs are apparently quite good.

I have done all of the above. There are wiring harnesses to connect speakers to the factory wiring for an '02. However, I don't think that you really need them. The factory speakers are plugged into the mounting cowl. I think that the wiring harnesses are to go from the mounting cowl to the speaker. But you can just pull the wires from the cowl connections and attach two female connectors to them. As for connecting component speakers, that's simple enough. The sail panel (which covers the tweeter) simply pops off with a little effort once you have the door panel off (for a guide on removing the door panel do a search--it's not too difficult). Then, the factory tweeter is mounted to the door with a mounting bracket that (I'm working all from memory here) that pins in on one side and has a screw on the other. You can attach the new tweeter through the factory mounting bracket with the mounting screw provided with the tweeter. Then just reattach the mounting bracket and run the tweeter's wire down to the cross-over making sure that it doesn't interfere with any mechanical components inside the door.

As for the new HU, you'll need a wiring harness. Then just pop the panel off from the center console. It is just connected with a series of clips all the way around it (no screws anywhere). Once the panel is removed, you'll need to unscrew the stereo and pull it out. Detach the wiring harness. Then, remove the amp (small white/silver box--maybe yellow?) and remove the wiring harness from that as well. The wiring harness you attached to the new HU will plug into the wiring harnesses that were going into the amp.

Thanks for the info. That is what I figured was involved. I'm going to give it a try this weekend. Hopefully it will go smoothly. If not, I will most definitely ask a few questions. After that I will try doing a sub install. I don't want a big box so I will have to get one of those custom fit jobies.

Zero importance. Just be a bit careful when pulling the door panels. I did not have a panel tool when I did all 4 doors. Good luck.
 
Yeah, it went really really smooth! Thanks for the help. It sounds great too. I just have my tweeters sitting in the fitting right now. I need to actually mount them. They didn't come with a good mount. Next project will be the sub and probably a 4 channel amp to run everything from.
 
decide what route you want to go with the sub first... enclosed box component unit or a powered sub... before you buy the amp.

that was my mistake. i got a 4 channel figuring i wouldnt ever want a sub, then was limited when i had to go with a powered one rather than switching to a 6 channel amp.

luckily, infinity makes the awesome basslink.
