I got a 2002 sr5 over the summer. It's all stock and pretty basic and Im planning some mods for it. I'm planning on some 17" tundra wheels. My dad says the larger wheels will mess with the brakes and we'd have to re-calibrate the speedometer; since my sr5 is running 15' wheels. What do y'all think? Would I have to do anything to the truck to run the 17's?
You can run them all day, every day.
It all depends on your tire size. Yes, your brakes will be less effective. More unsprung weight means more stopping distance.
Most of the people on here will counter argue that with the Tundra brake upgrade, which is a very good argument.
So... yes, you will have less powerful braking with more weight.
The speedo, though, doesn't NEED to be recalibrated. I drove around with my stock base model brakes (15" stock wheel) with 17" Tundra wheels with a 32" (265/70/17) tire for a while. It was off by a lot. 60mph on the speedo meant 67mph. It wasn't hard to get by, at all. I eventually regeared my differentials, which basically evened out the difference of having bigger tires.
There are speedometer calibration boxes available, look up Dakota Digital Speedometer Calibrator.
As far as an 02 goes, you likely have 3.91 gears, so I wouldn't go taller than a 265/70/17 (31.6" to 32ish") tire. You'll feel a little power difference going from the stock 225/75/15 (28ish") tire you have now.
To match stock tire size for a 17" wheel is 265/65/17, which is the equivalent of 265/70/16 (stock size for 16" model 4Runners)
