2003-09 Double Din Stereo / Navigation Options

I have a Kenwood DDX512, I love it, had it almost 2 years and no problems at all. I don't have the navigation option though it is an extra $350 and it doesn't compare to a Garmin. BTW, nothing is really going to be as good as a nice Garmin GPS; especially if you consider the upgrades and such you can get with the Garmin.

I hear that Pioneer is now as good as Garmin.

I have asked this in a couple threads now but nobody answered. How is the AM reception on everyone's aftermarket head units?
 
I bought an 07 SR5 a few weeks ago that came with the stock (non JBL)stereo with steering wheel controls. My wife's car has bluetooth so I knew I needed to add that at the very least to my new ride. I decided to go with the Kenwood DNX-6160. It has built-in bluetooth and DVD, as well as navigation by Garmin which was the main selling point for me. (The navigation is basically like having a huge Nuvi mounted in your dash.) I also installed the adapter to keep the steering wheel controls and an iPod cable that allows me to control the iPod from the deck for both music and video. You can also hook up a backup camera, XM or HD radio and play music/video off of a USB drive.

I installed it last weekend and so far I'm very pleased. The unit isn't perfect, but the bluetooth works great and the navigation is excellent. I never listen to AM so I can't comment on the AM reception. FM reception is at least as good as the original stereo.
 
Kenwood DNX5120. I could not be happier. Garmin Nav is fantastic and the deck is much more responsive than other ones I've seen.

I have no idea, I have never attempted to listen to AM radio.... ever. I would go out and give it a try and report back but I have no clue what would be "good AM reception" since I have no idea what stations to expect.
 
Hi friends.
Is the standard double din unit like Pioneer or JVC goes in a Toyota firmly dash without problems? Is the Toyota's dash completely the same size? I would like to change its factory unit for something new, but the guys from Toyota-center say the other producers units couldn't be set in dash in a good way because it differs a little from standards.

Any ideas?

There's 2 different sizes, the non-jbl dash you can install a double din with just a normal dash kit, if you have the JBL or nav unit, you will need an urban runner trim ring (search around there's a number of threads about it) I had the non-jbl and was able to fit a JVC nav unit in my dash with a normal dash kit

You can see the top of the aftermarket unit sticks out a little in comparison to the OEM unit. This is the biggest reason I can't bring myself to go aftermarket. Maybe the Urban Runner trim ring would help that, I don't know...

I can rotate the angle of the screen to fit almost flush with the trim ring I believe. I will take a look after work and post a pic later tonight or tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it looks like that because my screen isn't tilted in that picture.
 
I have had my Pioneer Avic X910Bt for a few years and absolutely love it. It has a slow start up (20 seconds or so) but is an improvement from my F90bt(30 seconds +). Other than the start up, it is awesome. I can honestly say that I prefer my HU over any stock nav unit I have ever had the chance to play with.
