2003 4Runner Won't Shift into OD

Most of the posts on won't shift into overdrive deal with cold fluid.

In my case the transmission shifts into OD just once, in fact if I turn the car off at a light then drive it will go into OD. But slowdown and the trans like normal down shifts back into L or 2 and won't go back into OD.

It will downshift on a steep hill then when you crest the hill it will shift back into OD. Then stop at a traffic light on a level surface and once you get back up to speed no OD.

I have unplugged the ECT by removing the fuse and it will manual shift thru 3 gears but not OD?

So it doesn't seem to be hyd since the transmission shifts normally after turning off the car. Doesn't seem like the temp sensor since the car is warm. There is no OD OFF code flashing on the dash.

Does anyone have another idea?

I have this exact problem with my 2003 limited v8, your post is the only one I’ve found with the same problem. I know this post is years old but did you ever find a solution? I was thinking electrical as well because all I have to do is turn the car off then back on.

First, check the level and condition of the transmission fluid. Then, inspect the wiring connected to the transmission and its parts. And test the solenoids. A faulty solenoid could be causing the problem with your Overdrive.

my friends had an issue were it was getting stuck trying to shift into OD, change the fluid twice and hasn't had issues since.
