2003 LTD V8 4x4 build - finally after 10 years

I've had my 4Runner for nearly 10 years now. Bought it used in 2006 for a steal and have been enjoying it since. I had a 91' yota with all the goodies but that has been long gone and since then I never replaced it. I left my 4R all stock besides some A/T tires and have taken it out like that. I don't get out much anyways. Just local desert, fireroads, etc here in SoCal.

Just got my wife a '15 Sienna XLE to lug around the 2 little ones. So to compensate for my man hood (actually the Sienna is awesome. Love driving it) I am going to sink some $ into my 4R finally. It has 205k miles on it and has not hiccuped once in all the years I've had it. .

Here it is in it's stock glory back on '08. Looks the same except more scratches and a surf rack on top.

I'm not going to make this a monster trail rig but something a little more capable to take the family out on little adventures.

I'll post pics as much as possible along the way.

Here are some mods on my to do list in the order in which I think they will come:

1. Lift - Bilstein 6112 and 5160s with Toytec Superflex (2.5/2)
2. Tires - 275 70 R17 - havent decided yet what tires
3. DIY/Custom sliders
4. Flowmaster Super 40 or Super 50
5. Hidden winch (Engo E9000S)


I'm BIG on savings so I'll be doing as much coupon/gift card/price matching as possible along the way. We are now single income and 2 kids so gotta stretch that dollar! I'll share as much saving's ideas as I can.

Here is what I have purchased/ing so far for the lift (all prices out the door shipped):

Bilstein 6112s: $551 (CARiD price matched Amazon)
KYB top mount, isolator, washer, etc - 2 sets: $45 (Rockauto - $20/ea plus shipping and 5% off coupon code)
Bilstein 5160s: Plan to get CARiD to price match shockwarehouse at $175ea
Toytec Superflex: $200

That's all I have on my list for now. I've been debating going with ICON 2.0 for the rear and/or MetalTech springs... but not sure. There seems to be very little info on the 4Rs and Billy 6112 and 5160s so I'll write up as much as I can.

I don't think I'll need the diff drop. Was thinking of going with extended break lines for the rear though. Anything I'm missing?

a small change to the suspension id suggest. replace those superflexes with the metaltech dualrate springs. i have run both, still on the metaltechs, and the metaltechs are far superior. ride 10x better than the toytecs ever did. plus they carry load just aswell as the toytecs. the metaltechs are the best spring ive run so far in mine.

Yeh I've been debating between metaltech and toytec. The metal techs are that much better huh?

Are you using the medium duty? I wont have any added weight in the rear. Also you think it's a good match w the 5160s or should I just get the icon vs 2.0 that is made for the springs?

could not agree enough! I absolutely love the MT springs. I hated my ToyTec springs. The MT springs are so far superior i cant even put it into words.

They are two different animals, i have the metaltech medium rate springs and i have no harsh bounces or jounce like i did with the toytecs. Such a better engineered spring it makes the toytecs look amature at best, and i love the toytec stuff, i still run my BOSS coilovers in the front. as for the shock i dont see a problem with the bilsteins. however i have come to love the icons that are paired with the metaltechs in the LT package. however you dont have to run the springs in LT they just have to ability to be. you should be happy with which ever shock you decide to buy both are good choices.

Wow didn't realize the Mt were so much better. I'll prob be going w those now

The stage 2 rear long travel kit comes out to about the same price as MT Springs + 5160s and the stage 2 comes w bumpstop ext and ext brake lines.

It's not like I NEED remote res. Besides the cool factor they are decently priced. 5160s also seem to be backordered at most retailers.

I wonder if the stage 2 rears would work well w the 6112 in the front.
