2003 v8 4runner ABS Pump Problem! Any Solutions?

Same Issue, What fuse do you pull?

I've got a very similar issue, but mine happens after the car is warmed up and not so much in the morning. I hear this grinding sound every 5-10 seconds regularly now, and it's killing me to drive it. Was the consensus on this that the entire Master Cylinder needs replacement? Can anyone tell me which 60a fuse to pull to get it to stop making the sound until I can get it fixed?

loud beeping/no brakes

I have just gone through this with a 2003 SR5 V8 4Runner and it is currently at the dealer. Unfortunately, the ABS actuator assembly is what they tell me is the problem and a whopping 3091.00 to fix it.
The noise started and the ABS and brake light came on, but prior to this, the VSC lights were on for weeks and showed low voltage. Apparently, this is all related.
Luckily, I made it to my destination when the brakes failed and putting it in park finally got me stopped. I am currently searching for cheaper versions of the part and ebay seems to have them.
Not sure how difficult it is to change out, but any advice would be greatly appreciated with the labor involved...Thanks!

07 limited v8 (160k miles) also noticed my pump is priming every 10-15secs or so followed by a slight squeek and if i press the brake it would prime.. no ck lights or anything .. other then buying new has anyone found an alternative? Im currently looking at a refurb unit with core exchange for around $600..

I've replaced 2 master cylinder units: one on a later 3rd gen (01/02?) and one on a higher mileage 4th gen. Unit was $1700 for our shop cost. Install was easy. Couple of lines, bolts and under dash stuff. Seems to me the pump is what assists in braking so it runs rather frequently.

And if I remember correctly, we were able to get individual peices but I can't remember. Makes me nervous for my 5th gen as its brakes are similar. Yikes.

seems fairly eaasy to remove and replace.. really didnt want to replace the whole unit if its just the pump but from researching a new pump was around $400 or so is the only reason im consiidering just replacing the whole unit refurb with warranty incase its not just a bad pump

search on ebay for used units or check the wrecker yards...shud run 400 to $600.

installed such about 2yrs ago...but the buzzing is getting more frequent, so it appears its going to fail soon, fingers crossed.:clap2:

Ebay units are 50/50 even if they warranty it, i would still have to take it back apart and send it back.. found a site that refurbs the oem unit with new parts 600+150 core charge +1yr warranty, send your unit back for the refund or if you knoe its the motor thats bad its about 300 for a new one.. im taking a shot at a new pump motor and take it from there..

An update.. so the new pump motor wasnt bad or cause of the squel instead of trying to replace the accumulator i went ahead and replaced the whole unit with a refurbish one.. straight fwd swap took about 2-3hrs from start to finish bleed the brakes, no ck lights and no more noise!! .. to be clear i didnt have no ck lights of anykind to start out with, just hearing the pump prime followed by a squel..

nice.
did you bleed with a scan tool?
how much did you purchase the assy? ebay?

When i finished the swap and bleed the system i was expecting a ck light of some sort but no, no ck lights of anykind other then my tire sensor light.. we to bleed it the way we do all our cars ( rear pass, rear driver, front pass then front driver.. . i thought i was gonna have to take it to have it reset but no, maybe got lucky? Refurb pump was 599 +150 core, i purchased it feom here ask for marion or david.. ..https://www.wholesalepartsexpress.c...product_filter.php?make=35&model=79&syear=411 .. still waiting on my core refund .. tell them Lay sent you If you do call them

I'm in the same boat. Just bought an '03 V8 RWD with a known abs pump issue. I've been trying to figure out if it's the pump or accumulator that is to blame. Is there any definitive way to diagnose which is the cause of the problem? I hear my pump engaging all the time while driving around. No lights on the dash or problems with brake function.

I just wonder if the pump motor is weak or if the accumulator is not holding the pressure. I've been looking at a reman pump on ebay, but don't want to pull the trigger if it ends up being the accumulator. I suppose the safest bet is getting a whole refurbished assembly.

Any tips for the diagnosing the culprit here?

As a small update, I actually work at a independent shop with 5-6 Toyota/Lexus master techs. I got the Toyota shop foreman to take a look at the abs pump for me this afternoon. He thinks that since my pump cycles on way more often than it should even without applying the brakes it’s likely the accumulator isn’t holding pressure well anymore.

Before asking his opinion, I was going back and forth in my mind about getting a reman pump from eBay or possibly getting the pump off and refurbishing the brushes and commutators inside. My foreman thinks we should first replace the accumulator and see if that fixes it. If it doesn’t, we’ll look at cleaning the pump.

Hey guys. I have dealt with the squealing accumulator before.

Always relieve the pressure at the brake booster assy by turning off ignition and pumping the brake pedal until it go`s slack. ( about 15 pumps) . Then you can proceed with accumulator removal. Also there is a spring and accumulator tube that may or may not come out upon removal. just go slow and easy.

Before you go and spend 400 Bucks on the whole accumulator, Buy the O-ring for it from a dealer. Remove the accumulator, replace O-ring, lubricate O-ring slightly , then re install accumulator. It is so simple that it is worth it to try replacing the O-ring first.

I wound up having to replace my Accumulator, and I have not had any issues since.

By the way, I did not bleed the system afterward, and had no apparent issues.

yeah, my problem is pointing towards an accumulator leak, as if am in stop n go traffic, the pump cant keep up, and the brake alarm goes off with lights on the dash etc. keeping the car idling in park for a few minutes usually resolves the problem as the pump is able to repressurize the system..

do you have a video of this accumulator oring fix?..
whats the oring size?

the O-ring isnt really a fix, but an option to try. Never remove the accumulator without a backup O-ring. If the O- ring is damaged you will be screwed if you dont have one readily available.

O-ring Size? no, just order it from Toyota to be safe.

I think I'll replace this oring before I buy the accumulator. If the oring doesn't make a difference, I'll try the accumulator next. Last resort will be taking the pump off and seeing if the internals can be cleaned up.

My Toyota master tech here at work is putting his money on the accumulator being the problem. The pump is running way more often than it should. He believes the accumulator isn't holding pressure anymore, so the pump just continues to try and build up pressure over and over. I assume if this goes on long enough the pump motor might fail from overuse.

Keep us updated until you solve the problem, I think I will be facing this issue sooner or later.
TIA

Good news, I replaced the accumulator and o-ring and all my brake noise has gone away! My pump motor is only running occasionally like it is supposed to, and there are no more chirping noises at all. Looks like the problem was as my shop foreman deduced, the pump was working fine but the accumulator was not able to hold pressure. Fingers crossed, but I think I just fixed this with a $175 OE accumulator from partsgeek.com. The Toyota accumulator lists for $447.88 (part number 47950-30010).

Hope this helps someone else and prevents them from spending $2000+ on a new abs pump assembly from Toyota when all they need is an accumulator.

did you watch videos to help in the fix?, i believe i have a similar issue, and am a bit clueless on where to start
