I experienced the same issue on my 04. Sadly, the shaft was bent which was ultimately the root cause of the leaking O ring. I took it to Toyota, as this job was well above my pay grade and had them replace the entire actuator. Almost 2 grand later no more leak and happy low and high. uke:

I'm only sharing worst case scenario hoping yours is just the O ring.

I called them once regarding the repair on a possible buy. Found another 4Runner so I haven't used their services, but they are very knowledgeable on Toyota's and Lexus. Since they are close to you, might merit a call to answer your questions.

I dont have any issues I cant take care of myself, it was in case something arose in the future.

I spoke with the owner he's a super nice guy. He recommended swapping the actuator. He said that the old ones can get pretty fragile and may or may not work when they replace the oring and reinstall them. $2700. I gotta find another solution here. I've got 230k on mine and it's not cosmetically great/my dogs and using it as a tool & supply hauler for remodeling has done a number on the interior. Struggling with putting that money into it.

I bought a whole transfer case used for $400. Mine is 203K already and there are lots of metal bits coming out the differential fluid. The one I bought had 70K . Once I can find someone to do it, Labor probably be $1K or so going that route. Cheaper than almost 3K , its too much hurt.
