I just bought a 2004 4Runner Ltd. I am very disappointed with the stereo. Can anyone suggest what upgrades need to be made to the audio system to improve the sound at low volumes. Amps? Speakers? Also, how hard is it to add a changer? Is there anyway to hook up an ipod instead of a changer? This car supposedly has the premium stereo with Navi etc.

It really depends what you consider an upgrade, do you like bass? Do you want more sound quality?

I think a lot of people including myself would agree that the first step to upgrading your stereo would be the head unit. No matter what type of music you listen to.

After that I would get speakers, and then an amplifer and then a subwoofer.

There is an auxiliary input in your center console compartment if you open it. I believe, I dont know though I haev a 3rd gen.

The stereo sounds terrible at low volumes which suggests maybe I just need a different AMP. As the sound system is tied into the rest of the DVD etc, it seems that Amp and speaker modifications. Again, any specific suggestions?

Realkakoman, Welcome to the forum. Lots of people here have modified their sound systems. There are so many things you could do based on the money, time, and your preferences. Have you tried doing a search on the forum? You'll find lots of great tips. But to help summarize. It is possible to add just about everything you mentioned. As NViejeP mentioned it really depends on what you are looking to really accomplish.

I am hoping to not have to replace the DVD and stereo head unit. Otherwise I am willing to do anything up to $1,500.

For a tad bit more than $1500 you can get the DVD/Navigation system! That's the way I'd go if I were you.
