2004 Limited Edition 4Runner 4X4 - Head Gasket

...Pulled the code and checked the forums. Yep, another toasted HG. One whiff of the antifreeze told me it had hydrocarbons mixed in.

.

Sorry to hear that man, make sure they will check for warped heads and best of luck with repair.
Just curios, was the truck heavily used: heavy towing, 4wheeling etc ?

Edit: eskimochaos is that you???
Agreed. 6 outta 100's isn't that bad... and the timing belt/piston slap/manifolds are all super spendy on the v8. I'm just saying a few head gaskets could happen and toyota has a notoriously bad reputation with them...

There are a few good solutions out there already for the 1gr, but they aim for the performance side of things and can get really expensive. 1st there is a cometic head gasket and with the combination of ARP head studs. The other option is closing the deck. Darton sleeves act as a closed deck but have passages that allow coolant to flow so there are no hot spots. I'll be doing this later down the road.

2006 Sport with 85K. So far I have had a toyota dealer replace the #2 coil, P0302 misfire. Then two weeks later, same issue, CEL, and they wanted to do the #2 injector. They got a P0302 again with the new coil, then a P0300. Hoped injector would fix it, I said fine since they paid for the coil. Two weeks later...guess what... Same Issue. Noticed that my coolant was low. one week later, poured in atleast a quart to get to the same coolant level with a warm motor.

Suggested that the dealership check the head gasket this time. "Never heard of the head gasket going out at 85k and we see 100's of em".

Q: should I also ask for a compression test?

Uh oh, HG on a babied 06 V6

And please don't take offense to this but your 4runner is 7 or 8 years old and has 187,000 miles on it. How long should head gaskets last? Forever? The guy with 49k miles has a legit gripe but IMO at your cars age I don't think you have anything to gripe about.

WHAT.....I take it this is your first vehicle?? Head gaskets should last (and are suppose to last) the life of the vehicle.....I've owned several vehicles well past 300k miles and a couple well past 400k miles without a head gasket problem. Head gasket issues are either caused by lack of maintenance...or a design problem. If many people are experiencing the problem then it sounds like a design problem.

Damn right people should complain about a head gasket. I don't know where you get your stats from...but if you properly maintain a vehicle you should NEVER EVER have to replace a head gasket.

6 outta 100 is EXTREMELY BAD for a head gasket. It should be closer to 6 out 10,000. I'd be embarrassed by that many head gaskets if I was Toyota.

The manifold issue was on early models, especially with cruisers and is not a direct internal/vital engine component. There are 2 failures on toy120 and at least 3/4 here and even one on Mud. Besides, a cracked manifold won't stop the UN from getting home after rescuing jungle babies.

Just facts, and just sayin.

i love how the V8 people jump to a conclusion of there being a HUGE issue with every V6 because someone had a failure of a part. There's plenty (a majority) of high-mileage V6 4runners on the board with no issues whatsoever. all they have to worry about is dealing with the gas mileage and rumble strip issues... I guess Toyota thought the technology is so unreliable that they decided to pull it into the new 5.6

I guess by that logic the V8 must be crap becuase of this issue with knocking: http://www.toyota-4runner.org/4th-gen-t4rs/69673-v8-engine-problems.html

Just FYI: anyone looking for head studs for a 1GR/2GR should know they are the same exact studs as the Chevy LS1. We just rebuilt a 2GR with them and it worked perfect.

Can anyone recommend a good head gasket sealer to prevent complete blowout? I've seen several different brands, including Steel Seal, that claim to fill in cracks and some that claim to expand the gasket. My 2001 SR5 has 165K miles on it. I was told by the mechanic that the head gasket doesn't have much longer. Not sure where the problem is or how to correct it. Haven't noticed any discoloration in the coolant. Thanks for any help.

Just got my truck back from my local dealer after they replaced the head gaskets on both sides. To be clear, my motor was not overheating, it ran normal temp at all times. It was eating coolant, but not much. As tracyscram pointed out, the car is not going to declare its issue, you have to be a detective to figure it out. Reading over all these posts, I notice the exact same symptoms I had.

If you are baffled, and about to do something like a MAF, do yourself a favor and test for hydrocarbons in your coolant.

If it turns out that you have bad head gaskets, call toyota like I did. Stay calm, stay diplomatic, and they may just help you out. Toyota paid for all of my parts, and my rental car despite the fact that my 06 Sport v6 has 85k on it. Parts were 350, plus one week of a rental car adds up. I would have rather had them pay for all of it, but something is better than nothing.

Happy to report that its running great, and hopefully will continue to for longer than 85k more miles.

Edit: eskimochaos is that you???

Eskimochaos, v8brah, and I believe DocMT as well.

I don't know why he's gotta talk s*** for the sake of talking s****.

Anyone reading this considering buying a v6 or v8 - don't be scared off by this thread or the guy who keeps ''coming around like ClockWork'' until he gets kicked off again (hence the name, as he mocks the mods...)

Anyway - both great motors!

What **** do you talk of? Proof that one engine is superior to another?

Just give it a rest. I also have a v8 and absolutely love it. During my search, I only looked for v8's as well. However, its been accurately said before that each have slight advantages to eachother, and to consistently ''try'' to make v6 owners feel bad for owning a v6 unnecessarily is just pointless. To each their own. And seriously, ''we get it'' that you're all about the v8, and have a personal vendetta against v6's and their owners...

HG Issue

I have a 2004 4Runner V6 Sport 128k miles. Same HG problem as others have reported. Cyl 6 misfire at startup, CEL and VSC lights on. Changed plugs, cyl 6 plug was more white and had some damage from running too hot, consistant with small coolant leak which would accumulate during overnight or while at work and then burn off about a minute after startup. I will be calling Toyota to report this as well! Having to replace a head gasket at 128k miles is NOT what I consider quality or reliablity. Of course my warranty expired at 100k.

I had the CEL lights and all come on as well. Code was missfire #4. Moved the coils around and still #4. Swapped plugs, still #4.

I have to assume I am looking at HG as well... Bummed...

What can I expect form the dealer ($$$) to have them both replaced???

Just back from the dealer. Another Blown head gasket. Same thing as above, very tricky to figure out. Rough idle at start up, then eating a little coolant each week. no overheating, no major indications of bad head gasket.. Ended up being drivers side HG. And there was a 2004 Tacoma at the same dealer for a head gasket issue at the same time as mine. Deny it if you want but it is sounding more and more like a head gasket issue for 2004 v6 toyota engines.
