2004 Limited will be gone 1/11/12

um, i'd take a cracked manifold over HG failure...are you kidding me?

I never said I'd rather have a bad head gasket. In terms of functionality of the engine of course it would be better to have a cracked manifold. There's no argument there. But just because it's functional doesn't mean it's legal to drive where I live. Both end up costing a pretty good chuck of change to fix. And my point was that the V8 isn't this completely bulletproof design that EskimoChaos likes to think it is. It's a good engine, no doubt. But the likelihood of a cracked manifold on a V8 is much greater than a blown head gasket on the V6.

Got it Head Gasket. The coolant mixes with combustion gasses/fluids. That sounds really bad.

From what I read it seems like the engine is totaled if that happens?

EDIT:Is there anything that I can do to avoid this?

If caught early it's an "easy" dealer fix. Nothing can be done to avoid this. From reports on here, it is most noticeable with rough idles upon cold starts and misfire CEL codes.

Yeah the worst part about the cracked exhaust manifold, is getting it off and then getting it welded and the re-installing it. I must have spent eight hours total taking the manifold off and putting it back on, I think if you had the hands of an eight year old or a women it might take so long..................
