When i ordered my 2004 Sport (V6) last year 3 different salesmen at the local dealer told me I could not get the ~$400 optional Side impact air bags in the Sport model. Later when I picked up my Toy, i discovered the 2004 brochure, and wouldn't ya know the featured 4Runner pictured in it was a Sport with Side impact air bags. I approached the Sale Manager and told him what I had ben told told previously. He told me they are available in the Sport but there is a long wait. I was stuck as I just sold my 99' 4Runner and had no vehicle. I really wanted the Side impact air bags (I think they should just be standard anyway) but i wondered if anyone else got them in a Sport and your experience.

So this is a case where both your dealer and the brochure are correct. You can get the Sport Edition with the side air bags, but you have to special order it. The problem is that the regional managers only order vehicles with standard configurations (if you go to toyota.com/4runner you can only order certain options, not everything in the brochure). They do this to speed up lag times and eliminate some of the different configurations they would have to support. I agree that this should be standard, but the federal safety commission does not, so it is optional.
Now that you have the vehicle, you can either sell it, take the loss, and order a new one with the side air bags (and receive it in about 4 months), or just enjoy the vehicle as it is. Up here in New England, if you wanted side air bags, you had to get the loaded V8 limited, even though it is available as an option on the base SR5 V6.

They didn't even tell me I could order it (so either all 3 salesman didn't know or some lied) -- all they did was find a 4Runner that matched my requirements in the network and had it delivered within the week ): It also did not come with the perforated leather seat as they told me -- it came with full leather (installed in Florida which i actually like also) but I was stuck and needed a vehicle. I suspect they were after the quick sale.
I am just a little disappointed with them as I have had such good service with Toyota dealers (for the most part) in other places. I did mention this in my post-puchase survey.

Unfortunately mine has been in my basement for two years now. Nothing wrong with it, just no time to ride right now. Hopefully I'll get it licensed and out next spring, as soon as I get the nasty old gas out of it.
