2004 V8 4.7 Limited with 95,600 miles question

Hello guys,
I am just new here and a proud new owner of a 4Runner! I have a quick question. My truck has 95,600 miles on it. As I have mentioned, it is a 2004 V8 4.7. Should I now be replacing the timing belt and power pump or wait until it goes to 100,000 mark? Should I bring it to a dealer?

I would do the timing belt and spark plugs right away. Not worth the risk of waiting. May as well check the accessory belt while youre at it.

Dealer will charge $1100 for the timing belt. I found a toyota specialty shop to do it for $650. Spark plugs are $100 for the oe iridium replacement.

I would also agree that replacement of the timing belt (and possibly accessory belt) should be considered at this mileage.

I just recently had my timing belt and accesory belt replaced at 135,000 kms - I waited a bit longer than Toyota's recommended service interval.

You should also consider water pump replacement while the timing belt is being done. I did not replace mine because there were no signs of leaks.

I had my work done at a dealership - I have developed a good relationship with the service department and only one mechanic works on my T4R. They are also knowledgeable about this type of work. An independent mechanic may not have seen a lot of T4Rs and may not be familiar with everything involved in this job. But go with a mechanic you trust.
 
Agreed.

Timing belt, pulleys, water pump, thermostat, and accessory belt. If you are getting it done at an independant shop MAKE SURE they replace the coolant with Toyota Coolant. I cannot stress this enough.

And water pump for sure. Already in there so it doesn't make sense not to.
 
If the previous owner hadn't replaced it, you should do it in the near future. Toyota recommends 90,000 miles as a conservative figure. I wouldn't sweat another few thousand miles or so if changing it now is inconvenient. I've gone 120,000 miles between belt replacements on 1 or 2 occasions on my previous T4R's. The water pump is worth replacing at that time also since they'll have to tear into the timing cover to replace that if it ever goes. It saved me on labor and gave me peace-of-mind.

These are non-interference engines so if the belt goes it'll leave you on the roadside but with no damage.

Thank you very much for your responses. As per your advice, I brought my 4Runner at a Toyota dealership near my house. Luckily, the previous owner has a record on that dealership and we found out that the belts hasn't been replaced at all. They qouted me 876 dollars that includes the pump, timing belt, coolant, and the accessory belt. I haven't picked up my truck yet. I will let you know the results.

Out of topic, I also found out that the truck has been meticulously maintained and the previous owner followed the maintenance guideliens by the book. I am so so happy! :banana:

I thought the V8 was an interference motor?
 
Hello again,
I just picked up my truck today at Walser Bloomington. It cost me 833.00 parts and labor. They replaced my timing belt, accessory belt, water pump and coolant.

I asked them if I could get the old belts, and true to their words it's really old. I could see some cracks on the timing belt, the accessory belt still looks fine, and the water pump is a little bit shaky. The old water pump is leaking coolant they said. What would happen if I will not replace that?

Which one? The water pump or the timing belt?

If timing belt, you would have needed to have your truck towed and buy some tissue to dry your tears. You would have busted your engine if the belt had completely cracked.
