hi, i just picked up a 2004 T4R Sport. From one angle the paint looks glossy, but from another it looks "chalky" or dull. I don't think it is oxidation, but just the paint. Has anyone had any luck bringing back the shine on these? and if so what was the best way that you did it? didn't know if it needs wet sanding and compound buff. Some have suggested just clay bar, wax and buff. any suggestions would be appreciated.

Congrats on the new ride man. I have a white 07, and I'll tell you that reviving this single stage white can be a task but it is worth it. Below are the steps I used on mine along with the products. Of course there is a ton of different stuff to use so others may have good suggestions also.
Wash, clay bar, re-wash, compound, polish, IPA wipedown, sealant, wax.
Chemical Guys- grey clay bar
Compound- Meguiars ultra cut 105
Polish- Chemical Guys white light
Sealant- Chemical guys jet seal
Wax- Colinite 845
Porter cable dual action polisher
Chemical guys Hex logic pads
Wash, clay bar, re-wash, compound, polish, IPA wipedown, sealant, wax.

I hate clay bars. I have an 07 that had paint like yours. I used this kit, minus the clay bar. Took me 20 hours to do but it was worth it

Man, that does seem like alot of man hours. May be worth it to pay someone else. I have been contemplating the same thing with my white 97. Was quoted $350 for clay bar, wax, buff, wash from a local shop. Divide that out by me buying all of the supplies and spending my time and it may be worth it. Just a thought for you. Plus a professional is doing it :thumb:

I've detailed mine a few times, check it out in my build thread if you want. The paint looks super shiny now, it was spotted and cloudy before I started, mine is white too.

I have a white one too. Over the summer, I put my PorterCable orbital buffer to work (Meguiars 105 and 205), then finished it off with Ultimate wax. Took about 4 hours (that's all the time I had), but it did get the haziness out of the paint. The paint got shiny again, but not where I wanted it. I was satisfied. Anyway, for the next time, with more hours to do the job right and the use of Klasse + Wax (seal in the paint correction and the wax just brings out even more shine). That is what I plan on doing in the spring.

Toyota white does dull over time, but it correctable to a brilliant shine with some work.
For a professional to do it, expect to pay several hundred dollars.

There are two factors that play into this and you need to answer them.
How much money do I want to spend to either have a professional do it or how much do I need to spend on supplies for me to complete the job? Also you need to ask yourself how much time do you have? It all depends on the finish you want.
The cheapest is to do it yourself if you have the time. I would suggest doing a nice hand wash, claybar, re wash then polish, compound, IPA Wipdown, sealant and wax. There are many great products you can go with. There is Chemical Guys, Adams, Poorboys World, McKees 37, 3D brand, Griots Garage, etc..
You will need a DA (Dual Action) polisher and depending on how much you want to spend you can buy the Harbor Freight DA polisher for $69 and then purchase a Lake Country 5.5" backing plate and the pads you need. You can also go with the Griots Garage BOSS system which has everything you need with the correcting cream, polish and sealant. The results with that correcting system is amazing. They also have a nice DA polisher that is reasonably priced just like the Porter Cable 7424. You could also go with the HD Speed which is an AIO (All in One) polish that is a cleaner, polish and sealant that will cut down on your time. You can get that and also use the HD Poxy Sealant/Wax or Collinite 845 is a wonderful and inexpensive wax.
Soap- Griots Garage, Adams, Chemical Guys

There is also a brand that I am using right now called Stay Fresh and they are local to South Florida and their prices are VERY reasonable from car soaps to clay bars to a 3 step paint correcting system that is a great product. Also another great brand I use is Shine Supply. They have great products also.

To me doing it yourself is better because you can learn about detailing and it is very addicting and the knowing you can do a job well done and transform your paint. You can also get on Youtube and there are tons of professional detailers and you can learn lots of techniques, etc. I follow Dallas Paint and Mobile Detailing, Sporties Detailing, Wilson Auto Detailing and G Works Detailing.

Had the same issue on my 05 Sport. White chalky paint. And I love the results the clay bar gives me. You can do this yourself with some time and effort and take pride in the results. All mine took was wash, clay bar, polish, quick detailer, then wax. Most of the supplies were Meguiars. Pretty happy with the results.
thanks for all the input. good or bad, it is good to hear that others have had the same paint issues and were able to bring it back, so that gives me hope! I was quoted $300 for clay bar, wash, wax from a local detail shop. I need to decide if i have the time to do this myself (i would love to). or if the price i was quoted is worth doing it myself or not.

Yes do that and before you choose a detailer get references on their work and if they have a website view some of their work. There are lots of people who claim they are "professional" detailers but they really aren't and could really mess your paint up with swirl marks and holograms from a buffer/polisher. Good luck and let us see some pics when you get it detailed.
Regardless if you do it yourself or have it done, I would strongly suggest you use a good sealant on it 2-3 times a year or the haze will come back in a year or two. I personally like Klasse AIO. It lasts several months on my car that never sees the garage. Make sure you use a sealant because it will last a lot longer than a wax.
This is after the whole thing was clay bar and the left side was waxed and buffed. I would say before they started, the paint was a 3/10. Now I would say 7/10. Great improvement. Can’t wait to see the finished product. Thanks again for all the help!

Looks great!! After they do that you should maintain it yourself. It is lots cheaper and gives you a chance to learn about maintaining you paint and vehicle. It really isn't that hard to do. Do you have an after shot of the entire vehicle?
