We just bought our first Toyota 4 runner. My wife and I love it, but there is one thing I dont understand. After I have started it up, stepped on the brake, shifted into gear, the rig seems like it wants to pull us along at 10-15 MPH. Is that normal? Its more aggressive than any other vehicle I have ever owned...

i know what you mean. It seems that at a stop light, I really have to stand on the brakes to keep from rolling forward from a stand still. There's been many occassions where I'm not really paying attention and I noticed the 4R creeping forward, almost hitting the car in front of me. I did have my foot on the brake but it seems that I have to really step on the brake pedal to keep her still.

My 2007 SR5 V8 4x4 does the same thing.
I just got it last week, and thought it had to do with my driving habits since I'm used to driving a manual corolla. Has very light brake feel, or doesn't require much force since the clutch is disengaged.
I notice its not as bad when the AC is off, and now that I think about it, my dad commented that his Tundra wants to creep when the AC is on too. He drives a little BMW with a manual so I always chalked it up to driving habits for his part to. (left foot braker...)

When driving my G35, the brake on that car is really touchy. A slight press of the brake pedal, the car instantly comes to a halt. At a red light, I barely step on the brake to keep her still.
It's very different from the T4R. The brake actually feel pretty mushy to me. Not grabby at all.
Jayp1981, Yeah, it is worse with the A/C on cuz it idles higher but even with the A/C off, my idle is at 550-570 rpm and the thing wants to press on.
BTW, mine's the V8. Wonder if it has anything to do with the 50,000 lbs of torque?

I have a 06 v6 with 14000 miles , about 3 times I put it in gear and it seems to want to take off. It's so quite I don't here if the rpm's are high. I stomped the brake and then everything was back to normal.

Im having the same problem also, its particularily bad when the AC is on (idles higher). The creep is soo strong, that like someone else said if you arent on the brakes hard or paying attention, it will creep right into the car in front of you. (it almost happened to me in a drive -thru)

I got into a habit of kicking into neutral on my T4R at redlights because it was getting annoying to keep my foot hard on the brake. (im a manual driver so im not used to having my foot on the brake soo hard.) Also i dont like that hard nose dive when braking, that must be a Toyota thing as my sister's Camry does the same thing. Does anyone run SS brake lines on their T4R? Does this improve brake feel on the T4R or is it just firewall flex that causes the squishiness?
The nose diving is a small problem too. When getting off the freeway, where there is a large radius curve, the front end dives and seems like the front corner (opposite of the turn) dips pretty far. I was thinking that the Xreas would prevent the 4R acting that way. Could it possibly be the weight of the Jaos brush guard and challenger lights causing this?
I'm hoping that a 3/2 spacer lift will stiffen-up the suspension to prevent it from diving so much.

I've been watching my RPM's and on start up they hover around 1600. after i drive it for a while, red light stops are more like 700 RPMs and not as jumpy. I have a friend that works at a dealership...i'm going to have him check and see if anyone has a fix for this. Rumor has it that the trucks did this too and they were able to adjust something.
AC Surge/drain?
I have the same issue. I call it a "issue" because if im driving around 50 or so you can feel the a/c pump kick on and off, just a little surge but very noticable. Same thing sitting at a light. The AC kicks on and off and you get a noticable surge. More than any vehicle i have owned. It just seems too much considering the hp and torque of the V8. If it sucks that much power to make the truck surge, just how much of a drain is this AC system? BTW, I just did a small trip to Vermont and got 17.5 around 70-75. On the way back around 75 up to 80 16mph with A/C on 1/2 the trip back during the day and off at night. I haven't seen 19 in a long time no matter how I drive. I wonder how much drag the AC is when off? Also, I did just switch to 18" Limited Wheels with 275/60-18's and really didn't effect my mileage. The AC seems to have more drag!
Anyway, just wondering if this is normal? Been like that since new just seems more pronounced lately. And with the magnaflow getting louder now, you really hear it too.

The high idle setting is normal on a cold engine and goes away quickly. In the winter, I often put it into neutral when going down the dirveway first thing in the morning.

I talked to my mechanic buddy and he said the same thing - cold engine, high RPMs, truck wants to go 20 MPH. He said there have been several people that have asked about that and Toyota is saying it is "normal operating" - which is fine by me - I guess the trucks do the same thing...
