2005 4Runner New HU Installation

I purchased a 2005 SR5 T4R about a month ago. I wanted to upgrade the headunit to a pioneer DEH-7700MP. After I went through a bunch of trouble getting the unit at a great price ($210), I was told by the installation tech that there was no kit available to install the deck. :< .

Is there anyone out there who knows if they are readily available right now, or when they will be? I am confused because the 2006 should be out any day now, and they haven't even gotten to the 2005 yet.....

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

what part of the installation kit can't you get. All you need is the HU adapter so it will fit inside the hole where the stock unit is. Other than that the HU should have come with everything (wire harness) and all you have to do is cut the stock harness and match up the wires. Any car audio shop should be able to get you a wiring diagram for the stock harness.

don't cut the stock harness. number one no-no in car audio. there are wire harnesses available for about $10 - $15 that will make the job much easier and cleaner. you just match the wires from the wire harness to the new deck's wire harness, and then mate the stock connector to the wire harness connector.. but don't cut the stock harness..
 
shockingly, my dealer couldn't understand why I didn't want them to cut the harness apart on my week old 4runner. looks like I'll be installing my nav system, rather than having them do it.

Just wanted to say thanks for (without your knowing!) re-assuring me that I was taking the right course of action!

You are letting your toyota dealer install your HU??? lol what does those jerk off know about installing car audio?? all they know is how to plug the stock adapter into the HU they don't know chit about wiring. if you are going to over pay those moron to do it might as well do it yourself! or better yet go to best buy or circuity city at least they will have the parts to install it and know not to cut the stock harness!:nono:
 
The head unit adapter has been elusive to find. (Wiring harness no problem) Metra and others only have adapters up to the 2004 T4R's. I have been to 3 mobile audio stores, and none has had it.

are the 2004 adapters that different from the 2005? i don't remember toyota changing any real options in audio, which means same audio packages, same sizes.. someone correct me if i'm wrong, but since the audio is the same, the adapters and dashes should be the same.. now i believe the sizes between the standard package and the jbl package vary..

They make two different adapters for 03-05 4R. one for non JBL and one for JBL. the 05 4R is just the same as the other. I got my free at crutchfield when I brought my alpine..
 
The problem must be then with the installation techs at Circuit City, Best Buy, and Al & Ed's Auto Sound. I was repeatedly told that there was no specific '05 T4R dash installation kit available.

I guess if it is not specifically spelled out in front of them, they cannot use any deductive reasoning...... I will try installation using the metra '04 kit and reply if everything works.

yeah I called too, but some how I couldn't find this darn post I posted it in at.... sucks. It only works for the sequoias apparently. Because their JBL system is different from ours? what the? oh well.

well i already got the wiring figured out to bypass the JBL without running speaker wires every where. but I dont know what instalation kit to use for the head unit. Do I use the regular celica echo one or do i need to buy the trim piece for the non JBL also?

Can you clarify something for us. Which stereo do you currently have installed? Is it the JBL 10-speaker (which comes in the Sport model) or is it the 6-speaker (which comes in the base model).

I ask because you're going to have a tough time changing the HU if you have the 10-speaker. Because all the speaker wires run to an amp in the back of the truck - not to the HU.

thats simple to do, maintaning the factory wires to the speaker. i checked the wiring diagrams already
 
That celica kit will not work, look at the mounting brackets for that link I gave you, I've worked on my buddy's 02 celica... pocket's brackets don't even come CLOSE! ...

FYI the echo sucks in trying to take it apart!
 
I used the American International kit discussed here:

I had zero problems, it fits great. I think the kit states 03-04 SR5 only. But I had no problems. I have the non-JBL system, 2005. The kit fits 4 or 5 Toyota models. You have to attach the correct brackets to the unit. Quirky, but it works.

I also used a wiring harness, which has not changed since 1996.

I bought both as Best Buy. They did not think either would work. :bonk:

Thats the kit i have, but I guesse I am going to get the bezel from a non JBL to make it work.
