2005 4runner sr5 double din question

I have a 2005 4runner sr5. I added a pioneer double din. No jbl/rds. I hate the small trim pieces that go on each side. It is not a tight fit. And if you press to hard on the screen it’s like it will fall behind the bezel. My question is, what are people using to prevent this? Are there some other kits I’m not seeing that are better. It’s like there’s no way to screw the headunit in. I noticed on the single din it has 2 screws so it’s a secure fit. But wanted a screen for back up camera. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I’ve tried the metra 95-8202 kit and the Dkmus kit off amazon. It’s better than the metro but still not tight.

Mine is solid as a rock, but I didn't install myself.

I had an aftermarket single DIN that I replaced, so I had to buy the original Toyota brackets to make the installation work right.

Yea mine had a single din originally. Ah so people are using the factory brackets. I don’t have the factory unit so I wasn’t sure about using them. Where did you get the brackets from if you don’t mind me asking?

One of the online Toyota Parts vendors. Don't remember which. Lately I've found McGeorge Toyota to be the lowest price on almost every factory part I look for.

This is a timely thread for me as I’m considering getting a double din to replace the single din Pioneer that mine came with. It works great and has Bluetooth, but I’d like to have the screen for backup camera and nav app.

Well you will be in the same boat with me and need to get the factory radio brackets. Honestly it’s probably not a big deal, and you will have to press in hard to make it fall behind the bezel but I just don’t like it being loose like that. I’m ocd about things like that so I’ll spend the money to get the brackets.

Thanks for updating the thread with the part numbers! Yes, I’m OCD about things not being hokey too. I probably won’t mess with it until the weather gets warmer here, but I’ll probably get the brackets and stuff so I have them ready to go. My only concern is that the previous installation didn’t cut the factory harnesses and used the plug in harnesses, but I won’t know that until I take it apart.

metra kit covers more. it makes it looks better. also with that, you do need to use the factory radio brackets.

you can also try the metra 99-8300, that has its own brackets. might be the cheaper way, but i didnt like how my single din with pocket mounted.
single din i prefer best kits.

The metra 95-8202 kit left a bigger gap on each side rather than the other one I ordered.

take a picture of the radio you have in the truck, then i can tell which kit is best for your radio. remember that if you have the stock base radio, you still need to use the radio brackets along with the filler peices. the OP states he dont have that so i suggested him to use another kit that has em, or he needs to buy the radio brackets first and redo the install.

Thanks for the offer, but its in and the kit worked just fine.

I assume the limited exception is for non-nav vehicles w/ RDS

Hmmm .... Crutchfield sold me the Metra 95-8210 for my Pioneer MVH-2400NEX install and I'm not happy with it at all. It's a one piece snap on bezel and I had to trim off the top piece in order to get it to fit when trying to put the dash back together ... the end result is that the bottom of the trim is fairly stable, but the top of the trim is loose. I'm looking for suggestions from others that fit better in my 06 Sport. Both the Metra and the DKMUS that the OP posted look better because they actually attach to the head unit, but am interested in others experience.

a pic of what? the install or the kit itself? I can get a picture of the former, but not the latter without taking everything apart again. After looking at the Metra website, it looks like I have the newer 95-8210 ... I didn't use the brackets that came with it but instead used the original Toyota brackets (the original 6-disc changer JBL head unit was manufactured by Pioneer, so the brackets fit perfectly), and then had to trim the top piece off completely (it was clearly designed to do so) in order to get the receiver trim panel clips to fully engage.

So while I've been waiting on feedback/suggestions from others, I've done a little digging around on the Metra website. In addition to the 95-8210 being intended for the Limited, it appears that it's also specifically intended to be used with the Metra supplied radio brackets (I used the existing factory brackets because they seemed significantly sturdier than the plastic Metra's). When used with the Metra brackets, the trim piece screws into the bracket in manner that holds the trim piece solidly in place.

With all that said, I have a Sport and Metra says I should be using the 95-8202. I'm going to pick that up locally and give it a try with my factory brackets ... and hope that it will fill the gap better on my Sport than others have reported.

I think you’re referring to riceandpho’s comment that he likes best kits for single DIN ... but thanks for the suggestion and the link. Have you seen one of these being used? Does it fit better than the Metra or DKMUS kits?
