2005 4Runner V8 Ticking sound

I recently bought a 2005 SR5 V8 4Runner with only 30,000 miles on it.

I've been noticing a soft ticking sound from the engine when I start the engine from cold. When i start driving it, it makes a louder ticking sound from the engine as I accelerate. The sound goes away about 1 minute into driving the car and never comes back until I stop the car for a long period of time. I asked the service advisor as a local Toyota dealership and he told me that's normal. He says it's caused by some sort of valve that gets actuated when the engine is cold. It's used to allow more fuel to the engine when it's cold.

Has anybody experienced this or knows anything about this?

Its Piston Slap. Completely normal, happens to mine from time to time. IDK about a valve like the manager said but you have nothing to worry about.

Piston slap? On a 30k engine? I certainly hope not. Most likely issue is a cracked exhaust manifold. I had one replaced under CPO warranty at 43k and my other one cracked at 53k (2005 V8), although still debating how to approach the dealer to have them replace it for free. Busted manifolds at this low mileage is shameful.

A friend of mine has an '03 V8 with the same engine noise. The dealer put him off, saying it was nothing to worry about. He wasn't very comfortable with that, so he is trading it in on a new Ford F150. Oh well...............

You guys should drive a V6 to hear ticking! OP do you think it could be the injectors cycling?

BTW, I call BS on what the dealer said the ECM enriches the AFR via injectors until its up to op temp, not some valve.

Yeah, I agree. Piston slap is not at all common on the V8 4Runner engine.

The noise I hear from my friends V8 is much too high pitched to be piston slap, which usually (from my experience is a much lower pitch sound).

Hmmm that is strange. It shouldn't be that way, that makes me wonder.

i have been getting the ticking noise as far back as i can remember, but only when it gets cold outside. I was told that this particular engine is usually noisy at startup, and is common among other toyotas that have the iforce v8. You can try to lower the noise issue by trying out different oils. I also use Lubro Moly Mos2 Engine Treatment at every oil change with mobil1. I noticed reduced noise and it runs smoother imo.

did this happen to you? I'm just curious to how a cracked manifold would cause a ticking noise. where do you think the crack would be located?
