So I just bought a 2005 4Runner V6 SR5 from my father in law. He put 155,500 miles on it in 6 years. Lots of highway miles. I'm wondering what, if any things I should be looking for as far as maintenance goes. New plugs, plug wires, it has the chain for the timing so should I do the water pump? I think I'll do the shocks myself (any elaboration would be great). Looking for the good, bad, and the ugly with this vehicle. I also am wondering what your thoughts are when it comes to towing two snowmobiles and a trailer. Fine for a vehicle that's never towed a trailer in it's life?... Love the vehicle so far and want it to last me a long time. Thanks in advance.

The V6 should have new plugs every 30,000 miles. So if they haven't ever been changed, I'd say they are WAAAAAY overdue. There are no plug wires on your 4Runner, so no worries there. I wouldn't worry about the water pump unless it starts giving you problems, but your 4Runner originally came with coolant that goes 100,000 miles before it is scheduled to be changed. The coolant is a non-silicate formula that is very gentle on the water pump seals. And if you didn't know, the seals are usually what causes a water pump to fail. If you don't see any coolant leaking from the water pump, then don't worry too much about it.
Towing two snowmobiles with a V6 4Runner is definitely not a problem at all. I've done just that several times with my V6 4Runner. The tow rating is 5000 lbs. Just hook up that trailer and go...nothing to worry about at all.

.................also, don't worry about the timing belt (b/c it's a chain which means its usually good for life). Do you have the service records for it? Change the front/rear differential fluids and transfer case fluids. Change tranny fluid at well (do it at a dealer, it's a major PITA to do). Good luck!
