2005 Brake differences between trims.

I've heard that previous models (<2004) had different brake sizes between trim levels. That is, SE models got larger front rotors while SR5 and LTD trims got smaller front rotors.

Is this still true for 2005 models? I can't seem to find any spec differences between the trims.

Its probably the same for 2005 as I don't see Toyota changing the brake specs all of a sudden. The SE got bigger front disc brakes than the SE/Limited so it automatically comes with 17" rims. Regular 16" rims will not fit the SE.

in 2004 this was listed as an extra feature for SE's only. They may have discontinued this as it introduced a set of special part numbers for SE's that didn't exist on any other model (i.e. brake pads, rotors, calipers)

As far as I know, the extra .75 inches in diameter did not significantly decrease the stopping distance or increase the stopping power.
 
The main reason for bigger brakes isn't shorter stopping distances or increased stopping power. Although it will to some degree, they will fade less than smaller brakes because they can dissipate heat over a larger surface area (big rotor).

Try 10 hard stops from 60 mph in a limited or SR5, then on a SE and you'll notice that the stopping distances will be shorter on the SE.
 
The increased size shouldn't make a difference during 1 or 2 stops. When you start doing a lot of quick stops or you are towing something down hill and using your brakes a lot, the increased surface area should help cool the discs more and reduce brake fade. Just a hypothesis...
 
Bobby and sharp4runr are correct. Larger rotors will have more mass which will result in overall lower peak temperatures during hard continuous brake applications. ..hence less fade. This is important when towing or going down a long steep descent with a heavy load.

If all you do is city driving...then this is probably not a concern.

So does no one have a definite answer on this?
 
Not too sure what everyone is talking about. I have a limited and my wife has a SE and they both have 17 inch rims which means they both have the bigger brakes.
 
Another reason maybe because my wife and I have the tow package that maybe the difference not sure why but we both have 17 inch rims meaning the bigger brake setup.
 
I was in contact with Brembo to get a set of cross-drilled rotors for my runner for decreased fade and increased heat disappation... The actual surface area difference of the rotors on the SE and SR5 are really not a huge difference...

(assuming both hubs are the same for each rotor)

SR5 surface area (for each rotor):
66.37 sq inches of rotor surface X 2

edit: forgot to account for both sides of each rotor...

SE surface area (for each rotor)
81.32 sq inches of rotor surface X 2

edit: forgot to account for both sides of each rotor...

Difference of 14.95 sq inches...
Multiplying this out across 4 brakes...

SR5 & Limited: 265.48 X 2 sides of each rotor = 530.96
SE: 295.38 X 2 sides of each rotor = 590.76

Now if we look at the actual pad contact area... we are talking about less than 3 sq inches of pad surface per front rotor (12 sq inches total difference between SR5 and SE).

Now I have forgotten more about Thermodynamics that I care to remember, but assuming the same core material (same iron content steel), and same pad material there should be some increasd heat dissapation but would it actually be significant? Crossdrilling is the best way to disappate head and decrase fade... Also switching the pads to ceramic (which also disappates heat quickly) would give the most gains.

Back to the original subject though... Toyota seems to be in the consolidation mode these days... 1 trannny (5 spd), 2 engines (same VVTI technology), 1 set of brakes (weight of vehicle increased, but using the smaller set of brakes)... Maybe it is just for after market parts availability... Who knows... Best way to check.. Go to your dealer and take a look side by side.

Look again... 17" are standard on Limited and SE. 16" are standard on SR5 (if you can find one with them).

Just because because the limited came with 17" rims doesn't automatically mean that it has the bigger front discs. If you measure the SE front disc and the Limited, you will see that the SE has bigger disc brakes.

Only the SE was given the bigger brake discs which necessitated the bigger rims. The SR5 was given the option and the Limited was standard because it is the top of the line model.
 
If I have to measure then it does not make a difference to me, I have driven both vehicles many times. I did a front brake job on my wifes sport and they look the same as the limited to me.
 
very small difference in diameter

SE front brake diameter is 13.1" (fronts only) 12.3" rear brake diameter

SR5 and Limited brake diamter is 12.3" (all 4 wheels)

Difference (assuming auto grade tolerances) is ~0.75" in diameter
 
Yep it is not even noticable. That is just my opinion we have both trucks one is an 03 sport and the other one is an 04 limited.
 
I believe the Limited's have the same size rotors as the Sport.

This is the reason why I can't find Winter Rims for my 4R.

Can you check as I believe the 04 LTD has the same size brakes as the SEs. If I recall correctly some people with 04 lTD had the same issue as stated above, that they couldn't (i edited as i mean't couldn't) get 16" wheels to fit.

Wheel size, rotor size

I think that the SR5 and the Limited have identical brake systems. The Sport Edition has slightly larger front rotors, which makes it more of a probelm for aftermarket wheels to fit over them.

The biggest issue I have seen as I am also shopping for winter wheels, is that there is a large positive offset on the 4th gen 4runner stock wheels (+30mm on my Limited wheels). This is a bit over an inch of offset. If you are moving to an aftermarket wheel 16", with zero offset (a lot of the aftermarket wheels seem to be zero offset) this will probably create rubbing problems when turning the wheels fully to the lock. A lift will help, but still if you increase the tire diameter, the rubbing will likely come back.

So I have been waiting for an OEM set of wheels for under $350 to pop up on eBay, someday. I'll just fit the same size tires, but with a winter tire like Blizzaks, they are available 265/65R17.
 
Wow, lots of them is right

Huge pile of 17" wheel auctions, it's too bad the shipping is $120 on some of them, that's overcharging for sure. It does not cost $120 to ship a set of wheels. Also a lot of them have no lug nuts, that's expensive to make up too.

They would fit the 4runners, even the Sport Edition I would bet.
