2005 JBL 4Runner ... added 2006 JBL head unit ... need help with AUX wiring

Ok -- a long long time ago (read : 2+years ago) I had a thread here talking about how I had purchased a 2006 JBL Synth 6-disc changer off of Ebay to replace my the JBL Synth headunit in my 05 runner. The main reason I did this is because I really wanted the MP3 capabilities of the /06 head unit.

Flash forward to present day.....

Still have the '05 Runner with the '06 head unit. Everything works great --- EXCEPT --- I never quite figured out how the heck I could get an AUX jack to work. Starting in '06, the runners had the AUX jack in the center console. My '06 head unit has an AUX button -- but I have no AUX jack. I also have no clue how I would splice one in.

Does anyone have any insight on this? I basically just want to figure out how the heck I could tap into a line to add an 1/8" phono AUX jack for my iPhone. I assume this can be done because the headunit allows for it ---- but I just don't know where to start messing with wires.

As is noted towards the end of that old thread : no one ever figured out the AUX thing. Hopefully, someone knows the answer now.

ASGN = Audio signal ground
ARO = Audio right out
ALO = Audio left out
ARI = Audio right in
ALI = Audio left in

WOW -- that certainly is a good piece of the puzzle. Thanks for posting that!! -- I think I am starting to see some things I didn't notice before.


So, page AV-123 appears to show a place to plug in that stereo aux wiring harness on the back of the received. I don't recall seeing that on the back of my 10 disc changer ... I am going to have to yank it out of my car again when I get home and take a look.


Does anyone know where one could find that stereo jack adapter wiring harness? It looks to be called "S31" (it is also identified as that on the 2006 wiring diagram found here : http://www.ncttora.com/fsm/Toyota.4Runner.2006/Toyota.4Runner.2006.zip).

I did some google searching, and I can't seem to locate that harness. I may end up stopping at my local dealer --- but I tend to not have too much luck when I go there.

Turns out that my Toyota dealer can only order the ENTIRE wiring harness for the dash (~$300). It looks like all I need is "S31 Stereo Jack Adapter" to make this work.


I would just go out and buy a 1/8" phono plug --- but I doubt that would work. There are 4 wires going to the AUX adapter. I assume one is left, one is right, one is ground, and the other is the control wire to tell the head unit that something is plugged in?

That sounds correct. Most stereo jacks have a pair of contacts that open when something is plugged in. You might be able to make it yourself, or perhaps a wrecking yard as any 2006 or later should have this. The manual mentions replacing this jack so you should be able to get it. Try another dealer. This plugs in to the same plug as your steering wheel controls. You might also try this....USA SPEC: Home

At this point, I think I am just going to give up and order a USA Spec module.

Turns out that an audio store down in central Florida by my parents house stocks them ---- looks like I can finally tell them what to get me for xmas

I was pretty much sold on the USA Spec one when I found out that it has both the iPhone and AUX inputs --- and it also lets you retain SAT controls.

Hi All - I know this is a really old post but I figured it may help someone out in the future so I thought I'd reply anyways.

I wanted to share with everyone how I got the aux in working on an 06 JBL (with the six disk changer). I was able to accomplish this with a standard 1/8 inch male to male audio cable (5 foot long) and a single 1k ohm resistor.

I apologize for not taking pictures. If I had known it would work, I would have! Anyway here's what I did to get it working:

Cut one end off of the audio cable and strip back the ends. Twist the outer shields together for the left and right and attach to the ASGN from the diagram. Take the inners and attach them to ALI and ARI respectively. That takes care of the audio piece.

Now, to get the radio to recognize that there's an AUX device attached. To do this, find the AUXI wire (I think mine was purple with a white stripe maybe?) and test it with a multimeter. Mine showed about 5 volts. Once you are confident you have the correct wire go a head and cut it leaving room to tap into the side going into the radio. This is where the resistor goes. Attach the resistor to the side going into the radio (they aren't directional like a diode so it doesn't matter which end goes to the radio), then add a short length of wire to the other side of the resistor to extend it. This side will be going to ground (yes, ground lol). You can either connect it straight to something metal or find the ground wire for the radio (which is what I chose). Don't forget to tape up the other side of the AUXI wire since it still shows 5 volts even after being cut.

After you've done this, you should now be able to turn the radio on, hit the cd / aux button twice (first time goes to CD second switches to AUX) and the radio should show AUX on the display. Plug in an MP3 player and test it out. If it all works, solder and tape everything thoroughly and test it again.

Also, I took the extra step (which may be unnecessary) and wrapped the audio cable in aluminum foil then taped over that. My wifes Honda has terrible engine noise on the aux input so I took some extra precautions on mine. I'm happy to say, I have zero engine noise through my homemade AUX input.

I then took the audio cable and ran it down the center console and had it pop out by the arm rest. Next step is to add a nicer looking flush mount plug. I hadn't planned on making it this far so I didn't order the parts lol. Now that I know it works, I'll clean it up and make it look pretty.

I hope this helps someone solve the AUX input dilemma and saves them $100 for the adaptor.
