2005 V-8 engine

I am would appreciate any opinions from the members of this forum regarding the new V-8 engine that will apparently begin produced for 4-Runners in November. What difference in acceleration will there be between the new V-8 and the present V-8. I am trying to decide whether to order a 2005 4-WD
4-Runner Sport with the new V-8 engine or buy a 2004 4-WD 4-Runner Sport with the present V-8 engine. What is the importance of the VVT?

Better engine management I believe which produces more power while also getting better gas mileage. All things being equal I can't see a reason NOT to go for the 2005.

either way you can't lose. if you wait, you get a newer more powerful 4runner while if you don't u get a well built 4runner. both are great and will be awesome regardless

if you have the need for speed, then wait else, I don't see why not. personally if you can hold out for abit, you might as well get the 05 since that'll give you a higher resale value

05- new engine
04- end-of-year deals/more negotiable on price

VVTi is variable valve timing. It's actually the same V8 but with VVTi. This allows more economic engine management but "varies the valve timing" when you need more power.

It is the same as Honda's VTEC.

The current V6 has VVTi which is why it can perform at numbers so close to the V8 with 2 less cylinders and almost a liter less displacement.

Personally, I would go with a better deal because that's money in your pocket.
If you intend to tow heavy loads, maybe wait for the 05 just to have the max. power possible.

Yeah...what he said. I picked up my new runner on Monday, and as I could have waited until the new model came out, the deal I got just couldn't be beat. You might notice those extra ponies on the 05' when passing on the highway, but stoplight excelleration is all torque, and I have plenty of that. Basically, it has ample power and I bought it for invoice plus a 1k rebate from Toyota. I'm a happy camper : .

What was the 1K rebate for? I'm considering buying an '04 soon and I am not aware of any rebates at all.

2005 V-8 cont

Hey Hitman,

unfortunately, those of us in the NY/NJ area don't get the 1,000 rebate, only the low financing option, but many dealers are selling for invoice or under now in anticipation of the arrival of the 05's. Contact at leat 10 dealers and make them compete for your business ( can you tell I subscribe to the "fighting chance" philosophy!

My New 04 SE V8

I've been lurking for the past few months trying to decide on a 4runner. I'm out of the closet now. Like to speak my 2 cents.

This past Monday, picked up a 04 SE V8 4x4. Decided to bite the bullet b/c selection (for a V8 SE) was getting tight (wanted the Stratosphere Mica color and a Moonroof on my V8 SE) and the price was right. There seems to be a surplus of SR5's models and V6 SE's in stock but there are very few SE's with V8 around here.

I knew about the 05's coming up and would like to get the more powerful engine but I could not wait (Nov+). I figure I would have to pay a least 1K more if they (05's) sold anywhere near invoice and not including new model price increases.

I don't really care for gas mileage, I'm driving the 4runner an average of 5 miles a day (work and back) so I'll probably fill up about once a month.

On a another topic, anyone get a V8 with a newer vin number that had the Sulfer TSB done at the factory?
