2005 V6 4runner over heated

Going to ask on here before taking it in for a checkup.

Veeery Loooong detailed story.

I’ve never had any heat issues with my 4Runner until last week. On a road trip and just about at my destination. Around 350 miles and 5.5 hours, driving from SoCal to Az. Outside temps from high 70s to low 90s. Had the AC running on low for most of the drive.

When I reached Kingman, AZ as I was pulling away from a stop light I happen to look down and notice my Temp gauge needle was dropping down from the top of the grey area back to the bottom edge. I’d never seen this needle higher than the bottom edge of the grey area. I immediately started to look for a parking lot to pull into, but at the next stop light the temp started to go up again, almost to the red mark. I pulled into a parking space and shut the engine off to let it starting cooling.

There was no smoke or steam, but my coolant overflow tank was completely full and had already spilled some coolant out into the engine bay. I let it cool for some time, and checked to find that the radiator was not full. (sidenote: I checked the day before hitting the road. At the time my car was on an inline, so the overflow tank was above the full mark, but the radiator was not 100% full. I assumed this was all because the truck was on an incline)

I took the truck a few blocks down to get some coolant at O'Reilly. I had my OBD2 reader connected to my phone to keep an eye on the temp and it got to just over 200 on the way to O'Reilly. I let it sit and cool while I tried to figure out what coolant I wanted to risk adding. There was no Toyota dealer to pickup the recommended coolant, so I got the Prestone 50/50 green.

I then went to eat some dinner (drove a few blocks to get there) and let it cool more before adding any coolant. It didn’t heat up to much on the way.

I did some research and was thinking the issue was that the system needed burping. I had just replaced the Radiator and hoses and few years ago when the truck was at 95K, it’s now at 120K. Did a full flush at the time and replaced with Toyota pink.

After it cooled my sister and I worked on adding some coolant and burping the system. It took about ¼ a gallon of coolant and there were some bubbles that came up. Also, the overflow tank was still nearly full.

We keep an eye on the temp as we finished the last leg of our drive, about 40 minutes on the road. It stayed around 186 to 190. The next day we checked and I was able to add a little more coolant. We drove another 1.5 hours to the campsite and it was still around 186-190, even when pushing 85 MPH.

Three days later after our camping I checked again and was able to add a little more coolant. Total added at this point was about 2/3 a gallon. Drove 2.5 hours, with normal temps. Used the truck some more that day with normal temps.

Next morning I checked and the radiator was still full. We drove home, without using the AC, but in 90 and 100 degree weather, and coming up thought the mountains on I-8. 350 miles, 5.5 hours and had a temp range of 186-192 the whole way.

So, should I take the truck to have it checked? I have no idea why it would have overheated the first time. Possible HG issue? Did I introduce air into the system by removing the Rad cap when the truck was on an incline? Everything seems to be working normal for right now, but I don’t know what caused this or if anything else could be damaged. I couldn’t see any leaks near the hoses or water pump.

Buuuuut, I have been hearing the “waterfall” sound for the past year or so, on cold starts. No other HG failure signs otherwise.

Please and thank you for any advice.

The waterfall sound doesn't have to mean headgasket. Mine makes the same noise because of air trapped in the heater core.

Did it only start to overheat at idle?

It could be the radiator cap since it doesn’t seem like the fluid is transferring between the overflow tank and the radiator. Cheap to replace if it’s the original

You could also pull the plugs to check to see how they look, that’ll tell you if water is leaking past the head gasket into the cylinders. How does the oil cap look? Any signs of water in the oil?

That's what I was hoping, but I just took it to a dealer to check and they confirmed there is a HG leak. I took it since I checked today and I had lost more coolant and the overflow was low.

I was thinking it could be the Rad Cap, but today I checked it after getting to work and the coolant in the overflow was low.
I just took it to a dealer near by and had them check it. The report is that it failed the Block Test, and there was indication for a Head gasket leak. Now I'm in the process of find out where to take it to get it fixed. Dealer starting price is $3500.

just got mine done for $1800. my first quote was $3000 there are shops that will be reasonable and do want the job.

Yeah, I'm looking to find an independent shop. I'm thinking $3500 will be the price after all the other work I'll likely have done with it.

I had the dreaded HG issue and replaced (cost was just under $3000 CDN) by an independent shop.

Having gone through that I will say that I did not encounter "the waterfall" sound. My symptoms were, loss of coolant, white smoke out exhaust, sweet coolant smell, rough idle at start for a few seconds and check engine light. If you are not having any of these symptoms then I would hazard a guess that it isn't a HG issue.

What tests did they perform to confirm its am HG issue? Pressure test? Are there any codes being thrown? Typical code and most common code is a misfire in cylinder 6.

Definitely try the rad cap first. Again if you aren't encountering any of the symptoms I listed above I'd be a little dubious of the diagnosis and would get a second opinion.

Best of luck!

Many different ways a head gasket can "blow". Sounds like it has blown out to a coolant port/passage.

I'm not fully sure what all the testing was. Paper work says it failed "Block Test", and I think the rep I spoke with said there were "exhaust fumes in coolant". He said they would have to remove the head before knowing for sure where the failure is (not sure how accurate that is). Also, no codes as of yet. Would a pressure test be a good second option?

I'm no expert, just going on my experience and the experience of others I found online while doing research. Most seemed to indicate that the leak was in cylinder 6, but, ya, I guess it's possible that it could go elsewhere...

Not sure of a pressure test would actually show something wrong with the HG, just that there's something wrong with coolant system. What I mean to suggest was compression test, however if the leak is elsewhere the cylinders will probably behave fine.

Anyway, just going on what I know and would hate for you to have that work done and not need it. Just sucks you aren't getting any of the tell tale signs.

Yeah where's the guy at who had some work done on his runner, got it back and then he thought his transmission started slipping. He takes it to the dealer and they pull some codes and tell him his engine needs to be replaced for $4500... - turns out nearly a week later after arguing with them back and forth, when they had it the first time, they powerwashed the engine compartment and got water down in the coil pack (I think that's what he said anyway).

Personally my wife took her Prius in for an oil change - got it back home. I checked to make sure the oil was filled correctly... wtf was this oil even changed?!? I took it back and watched them change it again and the oil came out brown as it usually is at 5k miles.

Moral. Dealer trust = 0

Do it now or later . .

Well, I found a good shop that's quoting 1800 for the work. I'll have them do whatever else while their in there. Any suggestions on other work to be done? Water pump, thermostat, oil pump?, I've got a sluggish lower idler to replace, and a leaking timing chain cover.

I'd really like to not have to pay and get this done, but from what I've read the hydrocarbons in coolant are a sure sign of either a head gasket leak or a cracked head. With the failure of these gaskets I might as well have it taken care of now before I start having more problems. Plus I've got a 2000 mile road trip coming up soon. Best to have the Runner in ship shape.

If it were not for the one case of over heating I would have never even looked further into this issue. Even now I've been watching my coolant levels for the past week and can't see a noticeable change.

EDIT/UPDATE:
Just bought a tester on amazon. I'm going to spend just a little more money and time to test it myself before going and wasting my money. At this point I'm hoping the dealer was honest with me.
