I was wondering what people are getting for gas mileage in their 4runner. I am currently looking at a 2006 with 143,000 miles. I am looking as a primary vehicle for commuting to work between 65 -80 mph at a 80 mile a day commute, and trips to the mountains etc. Using it that way for a year or two then using it as a back up vehicle for winter driving and trips to the mountains. My current vehicle gets 22 - 23 mpg, depending on the head wind. My second question, what has been done to improve the highway mpg? Thanks

Bone stock v6 on 265/65/r17 (stock size) least aggressive all-terrains on the planet. I calculate every time I fill up with the odometer trip and gallons filled until the pump stops. These are the scenarios I've experienced and their mpg.
-Going 40ish miles to work with speed limits 65-70 with some rush hour traffic on the way home, I would get high 17-18ish mpg.
-Doing around town and some highway driving 45-70 I get like 16.4-16.7 mpg literally everytime.
-In my college town, there are lots of 15-35mph zones and only occasionally hit the highway, I got 14-15mpg
-I towed a uhaul 6x12 trailer full of apartment furniture 300 miles on highway in 4th and got 11-12

I have a 2005 V6 with 215k miles on it running 265/75/16 load E tires and I average about 17.5mpg lately. I would say that's rather low for me right now since I'm not driving as much. I have gotten as high as 21mpg and I do hardly any highway driving.
I'll be switching to load C tires pretty soon so I'll be curious to see if the weight savings translates to any extra fuel efficiency.

I've never physically checked mine but the trip computer, (which is notoriously wrong), says I've averaged about 22 mpg since I bought mine 3 months ago. If I had an 80 mile commute daily I'd look at something else. I love my 4runner but that's literally burning money. I have an 09 Camry 4 cylinder that I inherited from my mom a while ago that will average 31-34 mpg on the highway. They're super reliable just like the 4runner and can be bought for cheap. Then I'd get a 4runner when I could afford it for the fun stuff.
That's was my initial thought, then I started looking at saving some money, but after some math, I cannot justify, unless, it gets 22 like my current vehicle, but from what I have seen, with my type of driving, it makes a good winter back up and weekend warrior vehicle. I have seen some say 17 to 18 mpg. I was initially thinking of a new corolla, but right now I want to save the payment and go with a cheaper used one for commuting...

I have calculated mpg using miles traveled divided by gallons to fill up on every tank for the last 3 1/2 years. The average over that period is 17.24 so that’s a reasonable idea of what to expect. My truck is a stock 2007 V6 4x4 Sport Edition on stock size Michelin Defenders.
