2006 Downshifting issue when coming to a stop

Hello,

I'm new to the boards and just purchased an 06 4Runner. I test drove it and had my mechanic look it over as well. Now I am noticing something that seems odd to me.

When I coast to a stop, without touching the breaks, I can feel the transmission down shifting. There is a slight catch at around 25-30 mph and another one at around 10-15 mph. Is this normal? Or is this something that should be fixed?

Otherwise, the transmission feels just fine and I have no issues. I'm wondering if the computer for the transmission needs to be reset? Thanks.

What is the incline?

The 4runner has a nanny system and if it senses you popping the brake on a incline, depending on conditions, it will pop a downshift to get more engine braking. Struck me as odd the first time I visited my hometown of Chattanooga which is in the Smokies and has tons of up and downs. I grew up there and drive it very aggressively. I would notice the truck downshifting when I popped over a hill and gave brake.

There is no incline. I live in the DFW area. Flat as can be.

Thanks. Not my first Yota. We have had an 86 pickup, 95 4Runner, 98 Tacoma, 05 Tacoma, 06 Tacoma, and now this 06 4Runner.


That's why this struck me as odd. None of our other vehicles have done this in the past.

Yup, nice to see another Texas 4Runner owner on here. Enjoy your new toy. If you feel/hear a clunk closer to a stopped position you might have the infamous driveline clunk. Nothing really to worry about and easy to take care of - check it out in this thread.

found this post accidentally...

but, I experienced this downshifting thing last weekend, when pulling a trailer.
heading down a hill, and touched the brakes just slightly...and bam, big downshift.

good to know it was working correctly.
