2006 Sport 4X4 4.7 with bizarre behavior

My usually reliable 4-Runner wigged out today, and I was wondering if anyone had a similar experience, and knew of a cause.

The vehicle is a 2006 Sport 4X4 4.7, about 65k miles, and has been dealership maintained since original purchase.

From a cold start this morning, I drove about a mile to the gas station, and filled up. Upon trying to restart, virtually every idiot light on the tach lit up and stayed on. I shifted into D, and it flat wouldn't move. So I shut it off.

Waited a minute or two, tried again, and got the same result. Then I looked around under the hood, but didn't see anything low or amiss.

One thing that really threw me is that the AT Temp light was included in what lit up - and given about a 1 mile drive after a cold start, I knew there was no way the car was even up to normal operating temp, let alone overheated in any way.

Tried to start it again, and it was back to normal. After driving it around for a bit, I went to the auto parts store and had them pull codes. Absolutely no codes had been thrown, period. It was a blank slate there.

I ran errands it in the rest of the afternoon, and zero problems.

I've been looking around in here, and this doesn't seem to be the same thing as the VSC / Trac problem a lot of people seem to have, WRT the gas cap.

Any ideas?

I had the original Panasonic battery up until this past winter. When it started to die weird little issues kept happening with the radio and the windows.. then door locks.. sunroof ... then it wouldnt start.. changed battery

Everything good as new.. Im sure it effects every truck in diff ways.. do a load test and see what happens.

Hrm...

Interesting replies. I replaced the original battery recently, after the OEM battery got blinkey. I don't think it is the battery. It always cranks like a mule.

XREAS rocks, BTW.

One thing that was different: I usually never let it get below 1/2 a tank. Today, it was near 1/4. That's not something I usually let happen. May be noise in the equation, but it was different.

Pondering

There is this weird dealer / port installed option called a Battery Amigo on it. Not quite sure how to rip it out, but maybe that's part of the mix. If anyone has experience with that, please share.

Thing is, if it's battery or electrical related, why does it still crank just fine, and the radio doesn't lose presets?

Uhm

Sorry, I may be testing some people's patience here. But I love this ride. I also don't want to end up at the dealership, being told it's a flux capacitor, or left handed transmission warp coil. And yes, my local dealership will do that to anyone.

I just want to keep driving it.

Don't freak out and start yanking things out just yet. I've had more than one vehicle that did crazy things like that once or twice, but never did it again. Give it some time and see if it happens again - it may not.

How long ago is "recently"? And just because it's newer, doesn't mean it can't have an issue. Like mentioned above, test it to see so you can rule that out.

I had it in for an oil change at the dealership today, and they didn't find anything wrong. And they look for anything they can generate work off of.

The battery tested good, and the battery connections were fine.

I also talked to the service adviser, who told me about the TRAC / Engine Light / VSC error I already learned about on this forum, but he agreed that the AT Temp warning light was something different / new. His only suggestion was removing the Battery Amigo widget.

It has been perfectly behaved since the day of the incident. At this point, I'm going to try the cold start / short drive / fuel scenario and see if it happens again.

3 more possible things I would check..

1. check wiring/pins on the diagnostic port under the dash on drivers side. Anything bent or shorting out can trigger the computer to freak out.

2. Clean MAF

3. Clean throttle body/make sure it functions properly.

Otherwiseeeee.. idk lol

Wild card: From reading the line items on the dealer service invoice today, looks like they flashed the ECM. I'm kinda annoyed the service adviser didn't mention that.

They probably did the smart stop tech reflash so that if you hit the brake and gas at the same time it cuts the engine power. I refused this reflash , my 4runner has never had any problem so i dont feel that it should me messed with now

Sanyo, your issue could have been something as simple as a little bit of water in the fuel that you had just pumped. Once that hits the injectors, all kinds of weird crap happens. This happened to my girlfriend one time in her Pilot, then never again. Weird shit, but it happens.

Thanks for the info. Who knows - I fueled up at a fairly new BP that has usually delivered good fuel. There's a Shell across the street that's had problems with their fuel quality. *shrug*

If the BP just got their tanks filled there could be sludge reaching the pumps. You never know, hope it's that's simple!
