2006 SR5 V8 Questions

Currently looking for a 4 Runner of my own. Came across a 2006 SR5 with a v8 and 77000 miles . The car checks out well other than some cosmetic damage. The front bumper has a minor crease by the passenger side headlight. The rear bumper has a piece that is punched out like it was hit from behind. The car fax shows a minor rear end collision. They are asking $16000 for it. Would this be considered a good deal? I know I can use the cosmetic damages to my advantage in trying to get the price down. Do the cosmetic damages warrant not purchasing the vehicle? Thanks in advance!

I bought a 2006 V8 about two years ago now with only a little more mileage than that. I think it was right at 80,000 when I purchased it. No cosmetic damage to speak of and nothing major wrong otherwise. I paid 15,500 out the door. So I feel like 16,000 for the one you mentioned is a little high. Also keep in mind it's close to some of it's major services like the timing belt/water pump replacement etc. On mine after about 90,000 miles the driver side exhaust manifold cracked and needed replaced, and now at 100,000 the passenger side manifold needs replaced too. I believe that is a common issue, you can do a little research on the subject here. In no way trying to scare you away from T4R's they are great vehicles and I don't ever want to get rid of mine. Just be thorough researching and inspecting the actual vehicle. I would totally use the cosmetic damage to your advantage in negotiating. If you have any more specific questions ask away.

Thanks for the response! I am going to keep my eyes open for other T4R's. the maintenance schedule is not something I thought about. That is a good point. I can now factor that into my decision.

Just to give you another data point...

I bought my 2006 SE 4wd V8 last December with 70k on it in very good condition (no accidents, all service) from a private seller for 16k. This was in Charlotte, NC. I think it was a fair deal; if you want lower miles you're just going to have to cough up the extra cash, especially with Toyota trucks.

I bought my 06 V8 with just under 160k miles on it for $10500. I'd try to work the price down. Even though the mileage is much lower, the truck is almost 10 years old... things break down over time too, not just miles. Just to put it in persprective, you'll most likely need to do some general maintenance on the truck once you get it. Front brake calipers ($600 if having mechanic do it), Timing belt ($1000), Exhaust manifolds if cracked ($1000 each side)... it will add several thousand to your purchase price especially when considering tax added.

Regarding the damage, if it's entirely cosmetic, I would say it depends how much it would bother you. Having bought a few cars with just cosmetic damage, I am going to try avoiding doing it again. I constantly found myself wishing it would just look right, but I could never justify spending the money to fix it.

Also consider "cosmetic" damage can actually be more than just cosmetic. Do all the lights function properly? Does any condensation collect in the light housings as a result of the damage? Small issues like this are something I would be cautious of.

Not trying to scare you away, just trying to give you some other things to think about. Best of luck in your car hunt.

Not thread relevant, but I looked at a very similar sounding car in Charlotte last November. I wonder if it was the same one.
