So I just bought inherited another 4 runner from my uncle. From what he can tell he has no knowledge that the tranmission had ever been serviced in the 200,000 miles he has owned the vehicle. He took the vehicle into the shop to have it serviced before he gave it to me and had the transmission fluid checked. It came back dark brown/black in color and had no particles floating in it so he had his mechanic the flush the transmission and change the fluid. My question is has anybody ever heard of 4 gen 4 -runners having transmission failure after the scenario described above or is the transmission failure on high millage cars just kind of myth ?

On vintage vehicles it is indeed a mistake doing the fluid flush on high mileage transmissions, BUT these transmissions are close to bullet proof and it's very seldom to hear of one going bad, so I don't think you should worry about it, if indeed it does go out on you later on, just pick up another from a savage yeard and have it installed and you should be good for many more miles especially if it has low miles on it.
Thanks for the reply. That was kind of what I thought might be the case. I talked to one of my mechanic friend's last night and he confirmed the transmission flush for high mileage vehicles can have negative impact to some makes and models. Thankfully he said Toyotas are models that tend not got effected by it. My uncle confirmed he has never had a transmission issue at all with the car so my hope is the service will have improved the shifter of the car, but time will tell if that holds true haha.
