2007 V6 tranny question

Just got an '07 V6 SR5 with 170K on it. It has the A750f transmission in it. Super clean. It seems like the tranny shifts smoothly but it's in overdrive by 30 MPH. When I slow down It does downshift but the tach speed doesn't increase when downshifting. I can't hardly feel it downshift. I know this is an adaptive transmission. Could there be a vacuum line off the tranny? Would disconnecting the battery cause it to relearn ? It just seems like it's shifting into the next higher gear too soon and in OD by 30 MPH. your help is appreciated.

I think I know what you're talking about.

The tranny is just geared that way. Up shift as soon as possible in the name of MPG (hahahaha).

I understand that. It just feels like it's lugging the engine.

Welcome to Toyota, if you think that's bad, drive a 5th gen. That Dual VVTi 1GR-FE is a bit peppier than the 4.0l unit in the 4th gens; not that you'd notice with how "fuel efficient" the transmission shifts.

Hell the new Tacomas are slightly worse, 6spds and that thing feels like a dog thanks to "it's all about MPGs"

I DO OWN a 2015 TP. So are you thinking that this is normal shifting for the 2007 ? I value your opinion. Thanks.

The first few weeks in my 4th gen did scare me seeing how low the RPM's where while cruising and how quickly it up shifted, but I did come from Honda's K20 and K24's where they revved to 8k and sat around 3-4k while on the highway.

I guess its that "lugging" at low RPM's that makes the V6 and V8's in the 4th gens tanks if maintained.

I feel like my 2nd gen Tacoma shifts better than my 4runner and 4.0 seems peppier. Could be a weight thing too though as I'm sure the 4runner weighs a lot more than the Tacoma. Not sure if it's the same transmission on both platforms though.

I read somewhere that the gears were slightly shorter. Different gearing. Dont take my word on it.

After driving it some today here is what I notice. It seems to shift fine from 1-2, 2-3, 4-5. It shifts quickly from gear to gear unless I get on the pedal and then it the shifts are longer between gears (makes sense). It's is when it is downshifting that I see problems. It almost feels like it downshifts then falls into overdrive . When it does downshift, the RPMs don't raise very much maybe 200 rpms. just seems like it is continually shifting down and then back up when slowing down. I know this sounds funny but it's then only way I can describe it. Do you think a trip to the dealer is my best bet or a transmission specialty shop ? I know the dealer will charge to diagnose it , where the trans shop will give a free estimate.

This is pretty normal with the 4th gens. I have two 2007 v6's and they drive identically. I'm like you though and don't care to drive around in OD at 30mph, so I tend to leave it in 4th gear if I'm doing 45 or less, which is most city driving around here. My wife thinks I'm weird for "shifting the automatic like a manual" but whatevs.

I think you're making something out of nothing. It's the nature of the beast. I'd go play "potential buyer" at your local dealer with another 4th gen and you'll see that it shifts the same as yours.

After driving manual trucks for so long, I am genuinely sad to be moving to an automatic, so I'm sure I'll be doing this a lot. Like, everywhere. What i love about manuals is being able to control the speed with the motor on curvy or steep roads. ::crying emoji::

I finally had time to check the fluid today. After entering the oil temp mode I removed the overflow plug and nothing came out. I put in .4 quarts and still nothing. I added another 1/2 quart and got a "trickle". I pulled the drain plug and it dropped 3.2 quarts just as expected. Put in 3.2 and buttoned it up after checking the level again. The old fluid was brown but didn't smell burned. I'll do a couple of more drain and fills as soon as the dealer gets more WS in stock. They charged me $6.99 per quart which I though was pretty good.
